Secret Agent's Alfa (as related by  the last owner)

This Alfa was imported from Southern Italy in about '68 or ‘69 by a David  Gemora who owned a machine shop in Tarzana. California.  His main business  seemed to be building prototypes for government agencies and according to his  family he travelled extensively in Russia and China. After he died his wife  gathered the kids together at their Woodland Hills home and said. “Now I can  tell you what your dad did for a living”. His children didn't know until his  death that he was involved in optical surveillance/global espionage with the  highest private security clearance available from our government.

Mr. Gemora and a young family friend worked on the Alfa at Gemora's shop from  about 1970 onward. Gemora and the young man rebuilt the engine and clutch in the  early seventies along with performing other mechanical work to keep the car in  good fettle for daily driving chores around Southern California. The car was  painted in lacquer at that time also.

The young man had always desired the Giulia and upon Mr. Gemora's death in about  2005 was able to purchase it from the family and I subsequently purchased it  from him.

Finding an unrestored 101 Sprint  with all of her important original items which has not been crashed or rusted  beyond the point of no return is a rather rare occasion. This "secret agent" car  tics all of the boxes without being so perfect that it would frighten some from  driving or parking in the real world. The correct and original 5 speed coupled  with the 1600cc engine of these Giulias makes them very usable in the real  world. The triple leading shoe brakes up front with our recent rebuild of same  make stopping from modern freeway speeds uneventful.

Being from Southern Italy before arriving to Southern California rather than  from our Midwest or New England means that she has not been compromised by the  horrendous rot caused by winter road salt.

She still wears her old school  lacquer paint from the seventies. It shines like a ruby but fissures have opened  up here and there as is common with lacquer. Of course there are dings and dents  from fifty years of enjoyment in the real world (as opposed to  the concours lawn). The bright work has not been re-chromed so the shine is far  from a new look. The overall look is friendly and honest like an old family  member who has refused to color her hair or undergo Botox.

We have done everything needed to  bring it to good mechanical fettle including but not limited to: New brakes. nbsp; water pump. front engine seal. driveshaft support. flex disk. belts. hoses. nbsp; fresh air ducts. rear suspension limit strap. carburetor rebuild kit. nbsp; reconditioned radiator core and more (some of these items needed to be performed  due to sitting in storage for the long period before the last owner's purchase).   The lights. horn. wipers and radio all work.

She drives very nice and one does not have to jump through any hoops to change  gears smoothly. That said. I'm sure that if I tried to challenge some youthful  sports car in a straight line I could "beat" the synchros. The engine starts  easily. pulls strong and does not smoke. When reversing briskly one needs to rest a hand upon  the shift lever to keep it in place.

Inside there is a lovely period Nardi wood rim steering wheel. Also. there is a  very cool. period anti-theft devise on the steering column (built in like it  belongs there). There are two photos of it below. It snaps into place and you  use a key to unlock it. I've never seen one like it before.

She is happy to be left alone and used for daily driving enjoyment but if you must restore her to concours lawn perfection at least collector car values are likely catch up to  past restoration costs (this has happened regularly in the past). This situation  will undoubtedly make those of us who lavish many dollars upon the objects of  our motoring desires look like geniuses.

She is fully serviceable on a day to day driver level and I drive her once or  twice a week as I rotate through the stable. As a driver as opposed to a  fully restored car there are several items to note:
• The fuel gauge jumps so it seems there is a connection issue somewhere.
• Of course some corrosion under the battery is assumed.
• The back glass has scratches in an area at the bottom where it appears someone removed a sticker very aggressively.
• Please scroll all the way down this page. read everything. see all of the photos and ask any questions you have so that you are clear on this car's condition and this auction process before bidding.

Steering wheel lock system!                                               While up on a  hoist if one pushes up on parts of the floorboards they are revealed to  be rather thin. This is likely due to the interior having become damp at  various times over the last 50 years causing this "top down corrosion".   This contrasts with the "bottom up" rust of Midwestern cars or those  from the Alps region of Europe. For someone desiring perfection rather  than a daily driver. rectifying this during a restoration is a very  straightforward affair as replacement floor panels are readily available. Installation falls within the skill set of any competent  welder. We make this sort of repair quite often in our workshops. The  transverse structural members are all sound and the corrosion appears to  be limited to the floorboard and wheelhouse areas. This situation on a  50 year old unrestored car is common and well known within the Alfa  community. This car can be used as a daily driver just as she is since  the world probably has enough $100. 00 show cars.
