1951 MG TD

The 1950 MG TD combined the TC's drivetrain. a modified
hypoid-geared rear axle. the MG Y-Type chassis. a familiar T-type
style body and independent suspension using coil springs from the
MG Y-type saloon. Also new were rack and pinion steering. smaller
15-inch disc type road wheels. a lefthand drive option and standard
equipment bumpers with over-riders. The car was also five inches
wider with a track of 50 inches. In 1950. the TD Mk. II was
introduced. produced alongside the standard car. featuring a more
highly tuned engine with 8. 0:1 compression ratio giving 57bhp at
5500rpm. It also featured twin fuel pumps. revised dampers. and a
higher rear-axle ratio. Nearly 30. 00 MG TD's had been produced. br/>including some 1. 00 Mk. II models. When the series ended in
1953. all but 1656 were exported with 23. 88 of them to the United
States. An example tested by 'The Motor' magazine in 1952 had a top
speed of 77mph and could accelerate from 0-60 mph in 18. 2 seconds.
In 1998. the rights. intellectual properties and trademarks
associated with the production of MG TD were acquired by TD Cars in
Malaysia to reproduce the TD series as TD2000.

This 1951 MG TD was supplied new to the United States and in the
1970's it became the property of Mr Leon Blackman of Pennsylvania
requiring restoration which he started in 1978. In 2005 the TD was
purchased as a rolling chassis with all the other parts in boxes
and shipped back to the United Kingdom where the car was totally
stripped down to the last nut and bolt and completely rebuilt. The
bodywork was stripped to bare metal and any parts showing signs of
rust were replaced with new parts and then prepared and painted in
guards red. The engine and gearbox had previously been rebuilt and
were refitted to the chassis. a new wiring harness was purchased
and the car was re-assembled. The TD was then re-trimmed in
matching red leather with a new hood and weather equipment made and
fitted in Tan Everflex. The MG TD was completed and on the road in
July 2008. since then the car has only travelled to a few summer
shows for display. This stunning MG TD is supplied with a V5C
registration document. an MoT test certificate which expires in
August 2014. a photographic record of the restoration and a file of
invoices showing the cost of such a project. The vendor informs us
that this MG TD is one of the finest TD's on the road.
