1979 TYPE 2 VOLKSWAGEN VW BAY WINDOW TIN TOP CAMPER VAN TRANSPORTER EMPI ALLOYS

1978 VW Bay Window Camper

The camper was imported from Germany in the early 90's. The van is a tin top. and has never been cut for a roof vent. but has been fitted with a camping interior. It is running on 5 spoke Empi alloy wheels. The van was treated to an overhaul. and the work undertaken is as follows:

Engine

The engine is a replacement unit from volkspares. It was bought as a complete unit. 1600cc. with crack tested case. new everything else. with a 009 distributer. It was the nearest thing to a new engine that they supplied. Since being fitted it has done less than 5000 miles. All the ancillaries are original as fitted items. refitted with new seals and gaskets. The exhaust is a twin quiet pack. which was paired up with new heat exchangers while the engine was being fitted. A New clutch and flywheel was also fitted while the engine was out. The engine mounting points were replaced with new items.

Running Gear

During the rebuild. a rust free LHD front beam from California was sourced by Alan Schofields. which was built up with any worn parts/ ball joints replaced. after the beam was fitted. the brakes were overhauled. and new shocks fitted. On the rear. both CV joints were replaced. the struts restored. and new CV boots were fitted. The rear brakes did not need an overhaul. so were just cleaned and adjusted. Receipts are shown in the photo bucket files.

Bodywork

The panels were replaced with units from Alan Schofields. generally regarded as one of the best suppliers of panels for quality. and fit. All the panels replaced are shown in the photos (in the photo bucket files) as well as a list of panels in the photos of the receipts for the build.

Interior

The interior has a double width rock and roll type bed with leather upholstery and under bed storage. The rear seat it fitted with seatbelts. The buddy seat sits over a small shelf unit and also has storage room beneath it. The main unit is a Smev combined sink and double burner cooker. The cooker and sink are plumbed in and working. the folding tap needs attaching to an electric or manual pump/water source. A small fire extinguisher is fitted to the unit. There in an overhead locker for additional space. The roof is panelled with pine to reduce noise and improve insulation. The sides of the interior are finished in beige carpet. with chequered vinyl tiles on the floor. The front cab area has a full width leather bench seat. with an arm rest. The flooring is the original rubber mats. The dash is fitted with a 12v socket and a JVC CD unit.

Points that may need attention

The paintwork is mismatched in several places. as the priority was to get a working vehicle rather than a show bus. The rear tailgate needs a new barrel in the lock; these are available from mega bug for £30. The driver's door does not unlock with the keys supplied. possibly due to the keys being worn. as both other doors open and lock with the same key. I would advise getting a new set cut for peace of mind and also to see if it resolves the issue with the driver's door. If not. it will either need a new barrel. or a key cutting to that spec from a company like KEYFAX. who can pick  a lock and make up a replacement. Alternatively you can do as I do. which is enter from the passenger side and simply slide across the bench seat. The starter motor skips engagement every now and then. When that happens. it means that you have to turn the key in the ignition several times. before it engages. It has never got any worse in the ten years I have had the van. so I have not bothered changing anything. and regarded it as a quirk….

I have advertised the van. as the tax runs out at the end of the month. and it will need collecting before the 24th of August as I will be away from that date until the 2nd of September. The van is currently insured. so if you require me to put tax on the vehicle that is fine. as long as the payment is made with plenty of time to sort things out. I can deliver the van locally but I don't really want to be driving it to John O'Groats or Lands' End if you know what I mean. Payment would have to be made in full before any delivery would be even considered.

I would strongly recommend that you come and view the van before bidding; it's got a lot to offer and has been great fun to own. 1. In response to several questions concerning the vehicle. I have contacted a supplier regarding the tailgate lock. They do indeed have these in stock. and they are available to buy at £29. 99 plus packaging.
2. The engine has small oil leak from the oil cooler. I have ordered 2 new rubber gaskets to remedy this. I will not be able to fit them/have them fitted by the time the auction ends. so I will pass these on to the winning bidder to fit themselves.
3. The windscreen washers are no longer on the original pneumatic system (that you had to pump up every now and then with a bike pump!) I have converted them to 12v electrics. which is much more effective.
