MODEL HISTORY

The Mark III Sprite was also marketed as the Mark II MG Midget – differences between the two were again restricted to minor trim detailing. Although still 1098 cc. the engine had a stronger block casting. and the size of the crankshaft main bearings was increased to two inches (engine code 10CC).

A new (slightly) curved-glass windscreen was introduced with hinged quarterlights and wind-up side windows. Exterior door handles were provided for the first time. with separate door locks.

Though the car could now be secured. with a soft-top roof the added protection was limited. The rear suspension was modified from quarter-elliptic to semi-elliptic leaf springs. which gave a more comfortable ride for a near-negligible weight penalty as well as providing additional axle location.

the upper links fitted to the quarter-elliptic models being deleted.

Though scarcely sybaritic. these changes helped the Sprite and Midget compete with the recently released Triumph Spitfire.

It has been suggested here that there was a "short run of vehicles (unknown number) in late 1963 with the Mk II body/interior but with the Mk III undercarriage/suspension modifications. " Although no source is given for this assertion. the basis may be more than speculation.

There are numerous recorded instances throughout Sprite and Midget production where specification changes do not precisely concur with model changes. At the very least. the prototypes for the half-elliptic models are likely to have been taken from the production line and some of these may well have been subsequently sold.

ABOUT US

GSB Classics is a small operation set up by us. a husband and wife team. running the business from a barn in rural Harrogate. We have been classic car enthusiasts for over 20 years. appreciating styles and trends of bygone eras.

Inspired by nostalgia of our childhood and youth. being taken off on family driving holidays. on one occasion being squeezed into the back ‘seat' of a two-seater. which was only really intended as a luggage shelf. These and other automotive memories retold by our parents' and grandparents' experiences set the back drop to our love and interest of the myriad of shapes. colours and sounds that earlier car manufacturing created.

At GSB Classics. we search high and low across the country. to seek out a variety of makes and models ranging throughout the decades. including the 50's 60's 70's and 80's.

Improving them to a level of their former glory and showcasing them for sale. occasionally. giving the cars exposure that they may have recently missed out on.

Honesty in our representation of each vehicle is a priority. There is no limitation to our search parameters. frequently travelling considerable distances. this being a common activity for classic car buyers; only to discover inaccuracies in the car's description when they finally view it. As a buyer. this is not only time wasted for us but also for the seller. causing all parties involved frustration and doubt.

Our descriptions and images of the vehicles at GSB Classics. give a true likeness of all the aspects that would be observed when viewed in person. preventing any misconceptions at the outset. This allows us to hold a small but changing stock. at any one time. offering them for sale at very realistic and affordable prices.

We believe that the experience of a ‘real drive' should be available for everyone. So whatever the season. get your driving gloves on and view the examples we have available. for a great time out on the roads.
