A sister to the Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn. the Bentley R-Type was manufactured by Rolls-Royce Limited between 1952 and 1953. The R-type was the last Rolls model to have pre-war styling. The car with chassis number B-103-RS. was the 112th R-type car produced.

Origin Of The Name
The name "R-type" is derived from the chassis numbers on the cars. The R-type models fall in the Bentley model line following the Bentley Mark VI. Sometimes called the "big boor/big boot'' model. the R-Type has additional luggage space and a larger. more powerful engine than the first Mark VI. Physically. the front of the car is no different than the Mark VI Steel Saloon. However. the rear of the R-type is extended and has a sweeping hump instead of the Mark VI sharp. flat boot cover.

Engine
The engine used in the R-Type is a 4. 6 liter 6-cylinder engine manufactured by Rolls Royce and renown for its quiet. smooth power. The engine. which can take the car to speeds over 100 miles per hour. uses dual SU carburetors with an automatic choke and electric fuel pump. The exhaust system is an especially important feature of the R-Type. Because it uses dual pipes from the exhaust manifold back as well as four independent mufflers. the system makes the interior of the car almost noiseless.

Coachwork
The coachwork is classified as a Standard Steel Saloon. It was one of the first cars to be manufactured entirely by Rolls Royce. (Prior to World War II. Rolls Royce built only the engine. chassis and drive train. leaving the coach work to custom coach builders. ) As usual. the interior is finished in burled walnut and leather. Every wood panel is cut in matchbook style with a line of symmetry in the middle and an exact match in wood grain extended to each side. Only Connelly leather hides are used. and all the carpets are Wilton wool.

The R-type Bentley was one of the most technically advanced cars of its time. The engine compartment contains a backup ignition coil as well as an emergency work light. In addition to a factory-installed sun roof. locking gas cap. and low fuel warning light. the R-Type boasts a fog lamp and a rear window defroster (look closely for the wires embedded in the window glass). The radio offers both AM and FM bands. and the R-Type uses a central lubrication system in which the driver can lubricate the chassis bearings merely by pushing a lever under the dashboard. The driver also controls the shock absorbers by using a lever on the steering wheel to choosing between a soft and stiff ride (a feature that appeared on other brands of cars in the 1990s). Unlike most of its contemporaries. the Bentley uses electric motors for most moving parts and pumps. including windshield wipers. Thus. unlike traditional vacuum-driven wipers that change speed as the vacuum changes. the wipers continue at a steady rate. More significant. the R-Type has an automatic windshield washer.

Advertising for the R-Type was interesting. One ad began. ``in these days of more casual living. Rolls-Royce introduces a car for those who prefer to drive themselves. '' When ordering an R-Type. the future owner had to specify a self-drive or chauffeur-drive. The major difference between the two styles amounted to a different tilt of the steering wheel (steering wheels designed for chauffeurs were more horizontal. like the steering wheel on a bus).
