Morris Minor 1000 Convertible. 1958

I bought the car from the owner of a series of auto dealerships in Pittsburgh. selling it for the estate of his deceased friend. One of the dealer's shops had performed an extensive body/chassis/paint restoration on the car (see photos) including new floors. stripped to the metal. repainted in a beautiful and elegant gray. to me about as thorough a body restoration as I could imagine.    And as the photos show. no rust anywhere.   Trunk floor. chassis. sills. body. floors. etc.

And the interior appears to be fairly new as does the top (somewhat crinkled being kept folded but in good. usable condition and an obviously new plastic rear window).   However when I got the car. it seemed to be lacking in the mechanical department.

Ran. drove. stopped. etc.   But not very well.    Hence work I had done:  compression was low in one cylinder. the head was removed and we found a slightly burnt exhaust valve.   The head was completely redone. valves. seats. guides. etc.   And when done. compression was 140 psi in every cylinder.   Perfect.

As Minors do not have an oil pressure gauge. the only way to know the condition of the bottom end was disassembly and inspection.   Bearings looked fine as did the crankshaft. all standard and perhaps offering some confirmation of the extremely low indicated mileage.   Nevertheless. I had new rod and main bearings installed.

Transmission was and is in excellent condition. usual for these early smooth case gearboxes.   But I had it removed and a new complete clutch assembly was installed.   At the same time. all of the brakes were done. new shoes and wheel cylinders.   The result is that the car starts instantly. runs perfectly. zero smoke. oil pressure light goes out immediately and says out. even at idle on a warm day.  

It never had seats belts which I had installed. has a good set of radial tires. spare wheel and tire. even the engine crank.    All (both of them) gauges work fine. and as one can imagine. it is a lot of fun to drive if one doesn't expect any more than what 34hp can provide.   But as a fun 'round town of beach car. it is a sensation with plenty of classic English style.   

Chrome is very good. doors shut properly. I would suspect (with all of the work I had done) this car is capable of driving anywhere and yes. the  heater is there and it does work.

There isn't much else.   Exhaust is quiet. lights work. has a new fuel pump. wiring is in good condition. handbrake was adjusted. I think between the last owner and I. much of this car is new or rebuilt.    And now. time for it to go to a new owner.
