1968 Jaguar Mk. 2  (240). Manual with Overdrive

It is taxed (free of course) and MOT'd.

I have owned the car for only a little over 2 years but have thoroughly enjoyed it. The previous owner had it for 28 years and carried out a lot of very costly work on it.

Briefly. what has been done is as follows.

New front chassis crossmember and crow's feet. Front suspension overhauled.

All new steering and suspension ball-joints. track-rod ends. bushes etc.

New brake pipes. New headlining. New carpets. Interior woodwork restored.

All new rubber door and boot seals. However. the windscreen rubber needs sealing – it leaks. I'll try to get it fixed before the sale.

Reconditioned radiator. and a lot of the exterior chrome trim has been replaced with new.

During my ownership I have carried out the following:

Rebuilt cylinder head with new valve guides. seals. cam bearings. new timing chains and tensioners. and an expensive full service at a Jaguar specialist - all within the last 1000 or so miles. This included all new water. heater and servo hoses. part new exhaust system and silencers. Front brakes overhauled and new pads fitted. Front shock absorbers replaced. Now that she has settled down. the tappets would benefit from re-shimming – noisy until warmed up but inaudible at 70+ on the motorway.

I have all the receipts for this work.

I have been pleasantly surprised at how well this car goes. The 240 is quite a lot quicker than the older 2. 4. This was due to a much better cylinder head design (the same as the E-Type) and the use of SU carburettors instead of the awful Solex fitted to the earlier 2. 4 models. Also. with the dual exhaust system fitted to this model. the exhaust note under acceleration always brings a smile to my face.

The upholstery and all interior trim is in excellent condition. and the car comes with a workshop manual and driver's handbook.

This is a car that would benefit from further improvement and attention (this is reflected in the price). but is thoroughly sound and not. like many others. hiding a lot of rusty horrors underneath. The paintwork is the only thing that lets the car down – ok from a distance but really needs a proper respray.

Also. on the rear offside wing the paint has shrunk causing cracks in the paint to appear – see photograph. Having said that. there is no serious rust anywhere. apart from a couple of small bubbles under one of the doors and on one of the rear spats.

Another recent little problem is the speedometer sometimes tells lies. but only since I replaced the speedo cable! This I really don't understand.

In May this year I took it to Ireland. a round trip of 600 miles. taking in a classic car rally in which it performed perfectly and did 24mpg. It is used regularly and drives and handles extremely well.

The only reason for selling is that I have too many cars and projects and my health right now is a cause of some worries.

I have tried to be as honest as I can. but if you are interested I strongly advise you come and see it. Remember. one man's pride and joy could easily be another man's load of rubbish!

I live 5 miles from junction 45. off the M4.
