Crayford Cabriolet Cortina 1600GT MK2

A VERY RELUCTANT SALE!.

(In fact. I'm still not sure I want to sell it. I have owned this car since 1988!!)

This is a very rare CRAYFORD CABRIOLET. Not to be confused with a Crayford Convertible.

The Cabriolet has a full hood with NO rear. side. passenger window. the Convertible has a small quarter window.

I joined the Crayford Car Club after purchasing it to find out more on this car and was informed ONLY 5. 1600GT Cabriolets were known to the club at that time. I also obtained from the Crayford Club. a letter stating the place and date it was built- Dagenham. September. 1969. 2 door GT. This I used to register the car.

It had stood for 11 years in a garage when I bought it and I used the car in its original state for around a couple of years before deciding I wanted to restore it and put it back to its original colour. which was Ermine White. The car at some time had been repainted in Saluki Bronze.  Upon stripping the car ready for paintwork I noticed the door cards had been marked ‘Show Car' on the inside.

It had a complete back to metal re-spray which cost in excess of £1200 back in 1991. Before re-assembling the car it was Hammerite painted inside and Undershield painted underneath. All of the upholstery was in very good condition and repainted in Black using Plastikote. New carpets and a reconditioned wooden Dashboard completed the inside. It also has a 2 spoke wooden steering wheel and a Motorola push button radio (I also have the original leather steering wheel).

A few Mod's were made when re-assembling…

*A 3. 54 Limited Slip Diff was added

*Lowering Blocks

*Brand new Single leaf Lotus Cortina springs

*Brand new BF Goodrich Tyres (rear) and Yokohama (front).

*Fitted on to 13” Brand new (rare) R. S. Alloys.

This car has stood covered up in my garage for some 14 years. through other commitments and projects. without use. I always intended to put this back on the road but realistically. not sure when time will allow it!

THE BAD BITS!

*Car will need to be re-registered as I did not do this when it went over to Road Tax Free.

*The engine turns over by hand but has not run for X? Years and was a Burton Built Clubman 1300 which I had mated to a Shorrocks supercharger. I sold the Supercharger many years ago and was going to replace the engine with a ‘nice' cross-flow.

*It will need a complete Brake Overhaul.

*Some slight cosmetic bodywork where it has been standing for so long

I have decided to put it up for sale ‘as it is' to give the new owner the opportunity to put their own mark on it.

You may wish to return it to original. I think a good X-flow and brake overhaul will put this back on the road for under a £1000.

Or you may wish to fit a V6. V8. Zetec. etc… and uprate the brakes and suspension to your own spec.

When I had this on the road. it was condition A. even after all this time I would say it is now B+.

The photos were all taken on 21st July.

I have more photos available upon request.

Any inspection is welcome to appreciate this car.

As for the price !!?? It's a piece of History.

I know what this would be worth when completed and have taken that into consideration!

I have set a reserve price and really don't know what to sell it for!. You can always try me an offer.

*** I wanted to add that the Hood is original 'everflex' I think. and would benefit from a small repair on the nearside near to the last photo which shows some filler cracking. It appears to have dried out during storage and suffered some moisture at the same time**. The window is in one piece and would also benefit from some 'Graygate' window polish.

** when doing the conversions back in the day. Crayford used gas welds and a lot of filler was used around the back window. No mig wleders in those days!

*I have many more photos of the car which I can't display on here. send me a personal message with your email address and I can forward them onto you.
