Current customer rating: (664 votes ) based on1978 Mustang II King Cobra
I started restoration on this rare car in 2003 (about 4500 built). and put it on the road in 2007. The original body buck tag. which displays the KC for King Cobra is re-attached to the rad frame.
After completely removing all the parts. I first repaired some front end damage. using parts from a donor car. I then stripped paint as required. and repainted the underside using POR 15. I noticed that there was no rust – the original paint was still in reasonable condition. Body work was completed to repair minor bumps and dents and frame connectors were added. I used the interior from the donor car. as the original King Cobra interior was badly weathered.
I sourced a 5. 0 L roller block and had it rebuilt. I used all rebuilt accessories. including the alternator. water pump. and P. S. pump. The A. C. pump was installed. but is not hooked up. We used a camshaft which is close to the original GT grind. I upgraded the EFI to the later Mass Air Flow system. and used a 1994 65mm. throttle body. along with some other parts. both bought and fabricated to angle the intake down and forward to the cold air box.
Clutch and flywheel are from a 1984 Mustang GT. The flywheel was resurfaced. and I used a new friction plate. I bought a 1989 Bog-Warner World Class T-5 transmission. and had it rebuilt.
I bought a Lincoln Versailles (narrow) rear axle. had it rebuilt using 3. 50:1 gears and installed a posi unit.
I added 11 inch disc brakes to the front. to match the 11 inch Versailles brakes on the rear.
I used a true dual exhaust system. which crosses over and uses a dual inlet / exhaust muffler. with chrome tips. The catalytic convertor is not installed.
The ECU is mounted behind the glove compartment door. and the battery was moved to the back of the car. using an aluminum battery box kit. I modified the wiring harness so that I could locate the various sensors and actuators where I need them.
I added stripes to the finished car. and had the hood scoop painted to match. I also added a stripe to the lower body area. which is similar to that used on a '67 Mustang GT.
The wheels are American Racing Silverstones. 15”. with a custom offset. to accommodate the slightly wider rear axle. and to give a better appearance at the front. Tires were all new with the restoration. and there is a matching spare.
The interior is average. the exterior is near flawless.
