Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.05) based on 691 votes

This pretty little MG Midget is presented in beautiful condition throughout having been restored to a high standard a number of years ago. To make things a little interesting. EWD 500K is to be sold here with a genuine NO RESERVE and will start at just £1. So please take a look at the images and if you like what you see. then read on and bid at a level you are happy with. knowing that you are in with an excellent chance of owning this lovely MG Midget.

I make no apologies for the length of the description that follows. as I have found from selling many classic cars on ebay that the genuine and serious buyers out there appreciate an honest and in depth view. especially if perhaps they are based overseas. However. I would also strongly recommend and urge you to come and view the car if you can. to make sure you are 100% satisfied for yourself.

About Me

I have been around classic cars for over 30 years. restoring and racing them. I enjoy and specialise in British classic cars of the 60's & 70's in the main. Through my contacts I love unearthing good. well restored or highly original unmolested examples and then take great satisfaction passing them on to other enthusiasts. I have. I believe. built up over the years a good reputation for dealing with people in an honest and straightforward manner and I only ever deal in classic cars that I would be delighted to own for myself.

I have had the pleasure of handling the sale of all types of MG's over the years. from projects to concours examples. My first car was a MG Midget and I still drive one today.

Listed below is the condition rating system used by one of the biggest MG clubs which helps to rate classic cars for sale. Using this system I would rate EWD 500K as between 2 and 3 but closer to 2.

Condition 1

In exceptional condition. full history. able to satisfy close scrutiny in any engineer's report and capable of winning a prize or commended rosette in a national concours d'elegance. Basically as new or better than when new.

Condition 2
No faults. either properly restored or mainly original with any repairs completed to a high standard with photographic or documented evidence. Perhaps not good enough to win a respected show award but not far off.

Condition 3

Everything in good working order with minor blemishes but no unsightly areas or mechanical problems. Likely to pass an MOT in 12 months time.

Condition 4
Some rust damage evident and mechanics. body and trim in fair condition for their age. Possibly some minor work needed to pass an MOT now.

Condition 5
In need of major restoration work. possibly unroadworthy.

History

The MG Midget is a fun. reliable and economical. 2 seater sportscar that is proving to be as popular today. as it was. when first introduced in 1961. It's hardly surprising when you consider that maintaining and owning one of these cheeky little cars is both affordable and easy. with every part still manufactured today and huge support via some of the largest clubs in the world. When you add to this. cheap insurance (even for young drivers) and free road tax. it's easy to see why owning and enjoying a MG Midget in today's environmentally friendly world. can and perhaps should be. a serious option over running other small. modern and somewhat soulless ‘boxes'. Also worth considering is that with current trends. your classic MG if kept in good order. will increase in value.

I sourced EWD 500K for a friend of mine last year. but due to ill health she very regrettably has come to the conclusion that EWD 500K should go onto the open market. So it is with some surprise that I find myself writing about EWD 500K as I know Sue had no intentions of selling this much admired MG Midget.

I am not aware of any significant early history to EWD 500K but the previous owner Mrs Emily Willcox. (who had owned EWD 500K for the previous13 years or so) was able to tell me that she bought it as a restored example from a Mr David Franck. On acquiring EWD 500K in 1993 Mr Franck had it fully professionally restored. It is a great testament to the quality of this workmanship that EWD 500K is in still such great condition some 18 years later.

It is safe to say that in Mrs Willcox's care. EWD 500K was very much loved and cherished. It was always kept in a dry garage with a dust cover over it and the history file shows that regular routine maintenance. regardless of mileage was carried out by her local garage. Talking of mileage. looking through the almost complete MOT trail from 1999 to current. EWD 500K has gone from 89. 20 miles to 92. 60 miles. so that's just 3. 40 miles travelled in the past 14 years. The history file also contains a current red style V5 in Sue's name. many invoices from Mrs Willcox's ownership and the aforementioned past MOT's with a current one which expires in June 2014.

Bodywork & Paintwork

It is quite clear from looking at EWD 500K today that the restoration carried out in the mid 1990's was a good professional one as it is still in such fine condition. That is not to say that it is perfect. it's not. it does have signs of use and age but it has stood the test of time very well and the nice thing about an older restorations is “what you see. is what you get”. By this I mean the restoration has had time to mellow and any major bodywork faults would have come out by now and thankfully there is no evidence of this as can be seen by the nice clean lines in the photographs.

The overall structure of the car is very good and sound. I recently cleaned the underside a little as some of the underseal had become loose. It is now all neatly painted black.

I would say new wings. doors. bonnet and boot were used in the restoration as by tapping and feeling them there is no signs of any filler. All of these panels are still in as new condition I would say. I think the photograph of the door hinges best demonstrates how clean all the apertures are. Also everywhere there is evidence of heavy use of Wax Oil which has obviously done its job well.

The paintwork overall is lovely. has a beautiful lustre to it and looks great finished in Brooklands Green. The pictures are current having been taken only a day before this sale started and it was in brilliant sunshine which is super critical to any paint finish and I think they show how clean the paintwork is and what lovely shut lines it has. Having said that. there is one two little blemishes here and there. nothing unsightly and only noticeable with a very critical eye. There is just one spot on the lower rear arch. driver's side that you may want to improve on. about the size of a 10p that has just broken the paint surface. But that's it.

Interior & Chromework

I was informed by the previous owner. Mrs Willcox that the guys that carried out the restoration were also specialists in trimming and with EWD 500K it shows! I must admit I am not the biggest fan of non-original interiors but with this bespoke complete leather interior I am now sold! It is a thing of beauty. finished in a very subtle charcoal grey. Even the carpet set I can tell has been handmade and edged in matching leather. Everything is exquisitely finished and far better than when they left the factory. The hood. which looks almost like new. is also a quality mohair one with a zip out rear window. And perhaps one of the nicest things about EWD 500K is opening the door with the hood up and still getting that waft of genuine leather!

All the chromework is excellent and nothing needs attention. In fact all the fittings and rubbers are in excellent condition throughout.

Mechanics & Electrics

I would never knowingly pass on any classic car with any major mechanical faults. I would sort them out first or mention any in the description. Fortunately there is nothing but very positive news with all the mechanical side of things. The engine is incredibly smooth with a very impressive 80psi oil pressure when cold and running at tick over at about 40 psi when hot. which is normal. It wants to start first time and once warm never deviates from its normal running temperature. The gearbox selects all its gears nicely and common with a lot of A series gearbox's the first gear is a little noisy. The brakes are excellent and pull up in a nice straight line. All the instruments are working perfectly and the electrical system in general is working properly.

Driving Experience

As I mentioned earlier I have been involved with MG Midgets for around 30 years and I have had the pleasure of driving dozens if not hundreds of different examples over the years and EWD 500K is up there with the best of them from a driving perspective. It's a joy to drive being tight. nimble and predictable. The engine is smooth and pulls well through all the gears and through the twisty bits EWD 500K is sure footed and gives you plenty of confidence to push just that little bit harder. My only criticism would be the double rear exhaust. which whilst original. does loose that smile inducing ‘bark' you get from the single rear box set up. So first on my ‘to do' list would be to change it!

Value

As for value. well first of all please do not compare this example with the many average ‘home' restorations that are out there. On my travels I get to see many so called restored classic cars and quite frankly most are disappointing.  EWD 500K is a lovely example that is ready to be used and enjoyed straight away and will represent a significant saving on the cost of restoring one. A new shell alone I believe cost's somewhere in the region of £5. 00 +VAT and that's without paint. Factor in a donor car. new parts. paint. trim and of course time and a restoration can soon reach £10. 00 to £15. 00. But ultimately EWD 500K is being sold without reserve and will sell therefore to the highest bidder. so if you like what you see. please leave your highest bid and you could be the winning bidder – good luck!

Please read these simple conditions of sale before bidding – Thank you and good luck if you decide to bid.

Conditions of Sale

As you can see I have a 100% history on ebay and I am a firm believer in doing business in an honest and straightforward manner. I have tried to give a truly reflective and in depth description but you must decide if this is the car for you. you are most welcome to view the car by arrangement. if you bid without viewing that's fine by me because I have done that in the past myself but you must also honour the deal and go through with it regardless on that basis. Please. if you are bidding from overseas take into account exchange rates. transport costs and any import tax you may be liable to pay before bidding.

The car will only be sold via ebay and I will let it run to the very end. so it will NOT be sold early at any price. I believe this gives everyone who has shown an interest in the car a clear and fair opportunity to bid and hopefully win the car. I have NOT advertised it elsewhere. If it helps I am able to deliver the car for a sensible fee. I have access to a trailer or I am quite happy to drive the car to you. I am happy to deal with overseas bidders and able to assist in transportation as long as cleared funds are in place. Any questions please feel free to ask via ebay.

If you have 10 or less feedback ratings would you please make contact via ebay to advise me of your intentions before bidding. I would like the winning bidder to at least contact me within 24 hours of the finish date to discuss payment and collection details. Cleared funds will be required before the vehicle is delivered or released. no Paypal payment due to their high charges. Payment and collection within seven days of the auction end. If you cannot meet this timescale please contact me before bidding.

For a bit of further peace of mind please see below an email I received from another happy customer on receiving his car in Australia. which he bought ‘blind' and I helped with the shipping. followed by some genuine feedback comments from other satisfied classic car buyers via ebay.

Hi Cameron. /span>

This morning i had my first look at the 504 Coupe. and i am extremely happy. and i could not be more thrilled about your honesty and integrity in describing the car.

The 504 is basically exacltly how you described it which is a credit to yourself. As you described. one or two small blemishes in the paint but on the whole a very very clean and immaculate car.

i'm still coming to grips with how unused the interior looks its just fantastic. im thrilled to bits over the car. very very happy.   Once primed with fuel she started first piston up and ran like a swiss watch.

I wont be able to take delivery of the car for another few days because the quarantine inspection is not happening until tuesday morning.

so all in all cameron a very good result. thanks for all your assitance and help and most importantly allowing me the oppurtunity to purchase the car from england. im very very happy with the car. also i sincerely hope that you have now received the outstanding amount. please if you could confirm for me whether or not you have received it yet. it should have been there days ago now.
