1964 Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT. Historic Rally Car (FIA Papers present)

Opportunity

I have had this car for five years. four of them being off the road undergoing a restoration.   I have a limited amount of spare time. which is attested to by the fact I have been reassembling the car for nearly three years. and so I have made the decision to put the car up for sale and allow the new owner to complete to their specification and timeframe.

The car is now very rare. being a June 1964 car and thus eligible for FIA U2TC races (you would need to refit Dunlop rear brakes). other Alfa racing series. FIA Historic Rallies such as the Historic Monte and many more.

With the conversion to left hand drive and the weak exchange from £ to Euros. this would make an ideal car for those in Europe as well.

If it doesn't sell then I will have Alfaholics or similar complete the car. at which time I will sell but at a significantly higher price than is being offered here.

I still have many cars I would like to own. and am happy to consider a p/x against a 996 or 997 Turbo. R8. GTR. Focus RS. Integrale. UR Quattro etc.

Brief History

The car was originally converted in the early 1990s by Richard Banks (now Alfaholics) to left-hand drive and to FIA Historic Category 1 Rally specification.

It ran successfully in the Miller Oils Rally Championship and then passed to Martyn Goddard who campaigned the car in many longer distance rallies. including the Pirelli Classic Marathon. Rally of Tests and others. and then on to the Hayes family who continued to do classic rally events.   The last event the car did was under the ownership of John Mayhead. the Goodwood Spring Sprint in 2011.

There are period reports and photos (attached blue car) available to support this. along with some early paperwork and more recent emails to confirm the history. including the engine being built up by Bob Dove.

Body Restoration

I acquired the car in August 2011. and used it as a regularly driven road car. but wanted to put my own mark on the car and so decided upon a light rolling renovation.   Those of you who do light renovations know where the story goes from here. through a full Celette Jig bare metal repair and respray of the shell.

There is too much body renovation to describe here. but briefly comprised new panels and repair panels from Alfaholics and Classic Alfa being fitted to the stripped. jigged and welded body.   The full rear quarters. boot floor. rear panel. door skin and front panel are complete panels. and the front right wing being a repair panel only.

To bring the car up to current regulation. new cage mounts were fitted along with strengthened floor mounts for the seat mounts and harness belts.

The newly repaired and restored body was then taken to bare metal and professionally painted in AR501 Rosso Red.

All body restoration was carried out by Racing Restorations in Pershore.

Re-Assembly

I received the car back from Racing Restorations in January 2014. and with such limited spare time have spent until now re-assembling the exterior trim. lights. handles. grill etc.   I used new gaskets and many new or NOS parts. including Carello rear lights (I have the Altissimo originals as well) and Alfaholics lightweight front indicator and headlight mounts.   The car is bumperless and has a Carello GTA number plate light plinth.

Inside is a new Alfaholics bolt-in FIA cage and GTA headliner. plus original trim pieces and new rubbers and gaskets as required.

Inside the boot is all new with an Alfaholics 55L FIA foam filled tank with sender unit. filter and Facet Red Top Pump. Teflon FIA legal AN-6 black braided fuel lines and fittings. and an Alfaholics battery box.   This is topped with a new Classic Alfa rubber boot mat.

The Bob Dove built engine (original to car and correct 1600cc) and gearbox along with the LSD rear axle and all suspension and brakes were not removed from the car. and remain as they were in full working order when last used at the Goodwood Sprint.

To Complete

Whilst I have perhaps broken the back of the work. there is still re-assembly to do and a new of parts to buy and fit to get the car to its full glory and ready for road and competitive use.   This is very much a DIY exercise and requires time rather than a lot of money.

Re-assembly briefly comprises the water pipes. heater unit. oil pipes. remote filter. oil cooler (if required). coil and screen washer.   I have a brand new Alfaholics stainless competition exhaust system to fit.

Internally the complete dashboard and instruments. seats and mounts. belts. new Classic Alfa door cards and rear quarter cards need fitting.   New side mount Sparco seats are also supplied.

The biggest piece of work is a complete wiring loom. and I would go for a custom FIA spec loom with lightweight wire and relays etc.

To Purchase

I have the majority of the parts removed from the car along with a number of new and unfitted parts to complete it. The significant items to buy are the wiring loom. water pipes. oil pipes. seat mounts and I would sensibly suggest new harness belts if you wish to be in date.

This car offers a great opportunity to buy something with a history. huge photographic record of the renovation. along with all receipts for new parts. and be able to complete to your specification and taste.   The car still has FIA Papers in place

1964 Sprint GT are rare. and I have recently seen a couple at over £10K in need of total restoration. and race ready versions (not rebuilt) at over £40K. so feel the price offered here is realistic.

I am not open to silly offers. and would encourage you to contact me for full details of the car history. restoration and photos. and to arrange a viewing.
