I acquired this lovely 1969 280SL in 2007. It had been totally restored by a well-known marque specialist and. at the time. it represented probably the highest figure that it was possible to pay for a Pagoda.

It had indeed been extensively and expensively restored. as can be seen from the photographic record that is on the history file. The car had been the subject of an enormous expenditure. both in terms of parts and labour. Corners were not cut. and whatever was required to restore the car to an ‘as new' state was clearly purchased and fitted. When I acquired it. it did present as a brand new vehicle.

But after a while it became clear that the vehicle was not correctly detailed. and so it was not quite the perfect concours car that I really wanted. I took the car to John Haynes to have it comprehensively inspected. and to have a report compiled on what was required to put the car into the condition I sought.

I got back a 12 page report that confirmed that a huge investment had indeed gone into the vehicle. but John meticulously itemised every wrong nut or fastener. every incorrectly routed cable. every non-original finish on a component. every slight incorrect panel gap and so on.

On one level this was a little depressing. but the exercise gave me a definitive guide on how to create the perfect Pagoda.

About a year after I acquired the car. by which time it had been featured on the front cover of Mercedes Enthusiast magazine (September 2008). I embarked upon a rolling programme to rectify all the outstanding issues.

For the interior work. I took the car to Mercedes specialist. D-Class of Woking. Amongst other things. Dave re-profiled the front seats. and changed the foam to the correct density. He swapped the carpets for ones with the correct period pattern. He made sure that the dash lined up perfectly. We also decided to replace the soft top roof for a factory supplied version.

Sometime later. I handed the car over to another Merc. specialist. Vanleigh Coachworks in West Moseley. to sort out bodywork issues. They rectified the gapping issues. and realigned the bumpers. Ditto the headlights. which hadn't been offered up properly. We also decided to respray the car in the proper and original shade of silver.

Next the car went to Joe at SS Motors in Weybridge. Joe knows classic Mercedes as well as anybody. as he's been working on them for over 30 years. It was Joe who addressed most of the detailing issues that had been identified by John Haynes. Much of the work pertained to the engine bay. but there were also brackets. clamps. pipes and cables that needed attention underneath the car. We also replaced part of the exhaust system.

More recently. Joe undertook a full recommissioning of the vehicle as it had spent much of the previous five years in a Carcoon air chamber. When I collected the car from Joe a few weeks ago. he told me that it was almost certainly the finest  restored Pagoda he had ever seen. And he's seen a few.

This did not surprise me because this is effectively a car that has been restored not just once. but twice. I cannot imagine that it is possible to find a nicer. more perfect. or more immaculate Pagoda.

I have priced the car at what I think is a realistic figure. I have seen cars advertised for more than I am asking. but I don't think that any of those cars will be better than this one. The mileage currently sits at 4. 00 miles. which is the mileage covered since it was first restored. Most of that mileage was recorded in the first year; it has barely turned a wheel since. The car also comes with a totally correct toolkit and a classic Becker radio with Satnav.
