I purchased this 1964. 3. 8 overdrive car in late 2007.

For some years I had been looking for a Coombs car. but could not find one with the provenance. or in the condition. that I sought. In my quest. I consulted with Ken Bell. who had worked for Coombs of Guildford in the 1960s. and who then and now runs a well known Jaguar restoration business.

Having failed to find an original Coombs car. I decided to find a good MK2. and to get Ken to convert it into a period Coombs spec. car.

I eventually came across a car that had been totally restored by another well-known Jaguar specialist: 3. 4 Engineering of Ilkeston. It was in near concours condition in most respects. although the owner had not wanted to replace the interior. preferring instead an original patina.

Ken inspected the car before I purchased it. and gave it a clean bill of health. noting only that there was a slight ticking noise from the engine.

I gave the car to Ken. and we agreed on a spec. that would have been typical in period.

Ken fitted the engine with 2” SU carburettors. and installed a straight-through. stainless steel exhaust system to an original pattern. He fitted an engine breather. and deleted the air cleaner. The suspension was uprated with the correct adjustable Koni shock absorbers and modified road springs. Spacers were fitted to the rear suspension. as were wider chrome wire wheels with ER 70 VR 15 tyres. He fitted a manual choke and a direct reading oil gauge. He also had the rear wheel spats removed and the arches converted properly with copper tubing in the way that Coombs had originally done them. On Ken's advice. we did not go for a louvred bonnet or a polished air spreader.

The car was then taken to MC Turley of Nuneaton for a new interior. Again. the brief was to give the car a period look. and so front seats were handmade to replicate what might have been put into the car by a gentleman enthusiast back in the '60s. The cabin was finished off with an original E-Type steering wheel; originally a £17 option according to the Coombs price list. The interior is stunning and still immaculate.

Sometime after all this work was completed. the ticking noise in the engine started to become more noticeable. On investigation. it was ascertained that a slightly incorrect sized piston had been fitted; not by  3. 4 Engineering. but by a friend of the then owner. This had unfortunately caused some damage and so. at a cost in excess of £10. 00. Ken completely re-built and upgraded the engine. The invoice is. of course. in the car's comprehensive history file.

The specification to which Ken worked was as close as he could get to that which appeared in the original Coombs price list.

“Remove engine and gearbox from chassis. Dismantle engine. fit high compression 9:1 ratio pistons. balance crankshaft. conrods and clutch assembly. fit lightened fly-wheel. dismantle cylinder head for full gas flowing and attention to manifold and valve seats".

The car is in immaculate. concours condition. having covered less than 2. 00 miles since I acquired it in 2007. It has power steering. by the way. and also comes with a totally. totally correct toolkit.

Since I acquired this Jag. it has spent most of its life in a Carcoon in a local storage facility near Guildford. although it has been started regularly. and driven every year for short summer runs.

This is a unique car. and whilst it does not purport to be an authentic Coombs car. it is as close as it's possible to get to a car that might have been worked on by the Coombs garage back in the day. It drives beautifully. It is E-Type quick. corners unlike any Mk. 2 you have ever come across. and makes a noise reminiscent of a 1930s' Bentley. There are many upgraded Mk. 2s out there. but I have never seen one done to this level of authenticity and quality. It is special.
