1933 MG J2 with sensitive XPAG conversion (conversion not externally visible). The braking system has also been upgraded to MG TA hydraulics. These modifications make for a fantastic. reliable and definitely fun driving experience!

When I originally purchased the car in 2010 it had a Ford E93A engine which was a common conversion in the 1970's. Following a lot of time and effort 'messing around with' the Ford engine I decided that the effort required to sort it out properly was more than I was prepared to put in to a non-original engine. The engine originally fitted to the J2 is not known to be particularly reliable as it only has a two-bearing crank-shaft. They are also like hen's teeth to find!

A little more research indicated that it may be possible to fit an XPAG engine into the J2. This normally requires modifications to the J2 chassis and bonnet. however as a mechanical engineer I decided. based upon the XPAG engine dimensions. that the conversion should be possible without modifying the J2. A few engine modifications later (including a fan belt tension adjusting system that keeps the dynamo in a fixed position). it was installed along with a modern geared-starter motor (the original starter clashed with the steering column) and MG TC exhaust system. resulting in a great little motor.

Modifications/ improvements include;

XPAG 1250cc Engine/ gearbox with unleaded conversion

Shortened. balanced propshaft

New dynamo (Lucas C40) and voltage regulator

New Facet fuel pump (solid state - located out of sight near the fuel tank)

New MG TC stainless steel exhaust

MG TA/ TB hydraulic brake conversion inc. brakes overhauled and new flexible front brake pipes

New Geared started (modern high torque. low current version)

New Electronic ignition (purchased. not currently fitted): new points were fitted just after purchase

New fan belt

New High-spark ignition coil. HT leads and points
