For sale is my 1980 Mini Clubman which I usually refer to as Charlie Brown. I am selling because I'm moving house and aim to buy a Triumph GT6.
In recent years the mini has had a lot of bodywork tidying and now looks great. When I bought it back in April the head gasket was blowing between cylinders 1 and 2. It had just had the valve stem oil seals replaced. I replaced the head gasket and correctly torqued the head bolts and have checked them at least 4 times since. I also replaced the rocker cover seal and adjusted the valve timing.
The car felt quite under powered and laboured when I purchased it but I have rectified this in the following way: It now has the standard air box with K&N filter element. a stage 1 carb needle (AAA). cooled inlet manifold (cooling not connected - most leave it off) and straight through LCB exhaust system with stainless back box which enhances that A-series rasp without deafening you. It also has electronic ignition for greater reliability.
After fixing the head gasket and a couple of electrical issues with the indicators I took the car to Tipton Garage in Sidmouth owned by renowned tuner Steve Miles. Steve has worked as race mechanic and competed at more Goodwood Revival meetings than most people have had hot dinners and could tune an A series blind folded. Watching him tune the little Clubman was quite an experience and the car felt so much better and free revving afterwords with the AAA carb needle. adjusted ignition timing and carb mixture setup. She went from developing 32bhp at the flywheel to a very healthy 54bhp in a matter of minutes.
Nearly 12 months MOT left which involved the brakes being rebuilt and brake fluid replaced along with handbrake adjustment and choke adjustment.
I drive her on occasional weekends and only in the dry which is extremely fun and economical. She gets lots of looks and comments - I think people like the original look and you don't see many Clubmans anymore. especially in this condition.
All four tyres were new in July this year and have done <100 miles. They are 10" Falken Sinceras.
The gearbox is in good condition - 2nd gear is known to wear out on the A series but no problems here at all.
The only real negative I can think of if I was to be picky is that if left for a while without driving there is a puff of smoke on startup which soon clears.
You can't have more fun for the money - I'll be very sad to see her go after putting so much time in.
I will store the car over winter if I don't receive any sensible offers as I don't have to sell the car right away.
