1975 TRIUMPH STAG AUTO WHITE, READY TO ENJOY, LOVELY CONDITION for sale

BEFORE BUYING THIS STAG IN JANUARY 2011 I TRAVELLED TO LOOK AT MANY. FIRST I HAD HOPED TO GET A REASONABLE CAR FOR UNDER £5000. AFTER SEEING A FEW AROUND THAT FIGURE IT WAS CLEAR THAT TO GET ANYTHING DECENT I WOULD NEED TO SPEND AT LEAST £8000. AND SO THE SEARCH CONTINUED WITH INCREASED BUDGET. EVEN AT £8000 I FELT THAT I WOULD HAVE TO SPEND MONEY PUTTING THINGS RIGHT.

WHEN I SAW THIS CAR ADVERTISED FOR SALE AT £4000 I KNEW IT WOULD BE ROUGH. BUT I WENT TO SEE IT. TRAVELLING 140 MILES. TO BE FAIR IT WAS BETTER THAN A LOT I HAD SEEN FOR MORE MONEY AND DECIDED THAT I MAY AS WELL BUY IT. SPEND SOME MONEY AND GET IT HOW I WANTED IT. IT DROVE THE 140 MILES BACK HOME WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. UNTIL I PULLED ONTO MY DRIVE WITH A PUNCTURE!

THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD OWNED IT FOR 3 YEARS AND DURING THAT TIME HE FITTED NEW BOOT BOARDS. NEW FUEL TANK. BOOT CARPETS. NEW INTERIOR FOAM IN SETAS. PLUS NEW COVERS. THE TONNEAU AND ROOF BAR HAD ALSO BEEN RE-TRIMMED TO MATCH. HE HAD FITTED NEW DRIVESHAFTS. STAINLESS EXHAUST. KENLOWE FAN. LUMENTION. WIRE WHEELS. SPIN ON OIL FILTER CONVERSION. NEW WATER HOSES. BALL JOINTS. DROP LINKS. WINDSCREEN AND TYRES. I HAVE RECEIPTS FOR MOST OF THIS STUFF.

SINCE BUYING IT I HAVE SPENT A LOT OF TIME AND MONEY - NEW OIL AND FILTER. AIR FILTER. HOT AIR DUCT HOSES. FUEL OVERFLOW PIPES. FRONT ANTI ROLL BAR BUSHES. FRONT BRAKE PADS. LOWER REAR SHOCK BUSHES. NEW OIL COOLER. NEW 4 ROW RAD (IT NEVER OVERHEATS!!). EW BADGES. NEW CHROME WHEEL SPINNERS. WAXOYLES ALMOST EVERYWHERE THAN CAB BE GOT AT INSIDE AND OUT. REPLACED INTERIOR SOUND DEADENING.

I SENT IT TO A LOCAL. TRUSTED BODYSHOP AND ALLOWED THEM TO TIDY A FEW PLACES THAT WERE SHOWING SIGNS OF RUST AS I WAS NOT GETTING ENOUGH SPARE TIME TO DO IT MYSELF. ONCE RETURNED I FITTED NEW STAINLESS OVERSILLS. THEY ARE EASILY REMOVED SHOULD YOU NEED TO GET BEHIND THEM. WHEN I BOUGHT THE CAR THE PREVIOUS OWNER WAS VERY PROUD OF THE FACT THAT HE HAD HAD THE UNDERNEATH STEAM CLEANED. I FELT IT BETER TO PROTECT THE UNDERSIDE AND UNDERSEALED AND WAXOYLED IT.

BACK TO THE INTERIOR - DOOR CARDS HAD BEEN RE-TRIMMED BUT THE HARDBOARD WAS WARPED. SO I GOT NEW ONES. WHEN FITTING THEM BACK I CAREFULLY CUT POLYTHENE TO STICK ON THE INSIDE OF THE DOORS. THE WAY THEY WERE ORIGINALLY. I INVESTED IN A WALNUT DASH KIT WHICH IN MY OPINION LOOKS BETTER THAN 70s TEAK! 2 NEW SUN VISORS WERE ALSO FITTED.

THE SPENDING HAS BY NOW BEGUN TO WORRY ME!!

I KNEW THE DIFF WAS GOING TO NEED REPLACING AS IT HAD A LOT OF BACKLASH AND WHINED. RATHER THAN HAVE THE CAR OFF THE ROAD. I BOUGHT A SECONDHAND DIFF WHICH WENT TO A SPECIALIST WITH INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE IT AS IT SHOULD BE.  ALL IT NEEDED WAS AS SET OF NEW BEARINGS AND SEALS. THE CROWN WHEEL AND PINION WERE GOOD. SO WAS THE QUILL SHAFT. I REMOVED THE ORIGINAL AND FITTED THE RECON USING NEW DIFF MOUNTINGS. I ALSO REPLACED BOTH SUBFRAME MOUNTS. MORE WAXOYL WAS APPLIED!

THE CAR HAS A HARDTOP. BUT IT DOES NEED RESTORING. I WOULD NEVER BOTHER AS IT IS A TOP OFF TYPE OF CAR. THE HOOD THAT CAME WITH THE CAR WAS HIDEOUS. IT WAS THE SORT OF COLOUR YOU SEE ON 1950 LAND ROVERS. I REPLACED IT WITH A LOVELY BLACK MOHAIR HOOD WITH RECON FRAME (VERY EXPENSIVE).

I FITTED NEW INNER HEADLAMP UNITS. ALL 4 ARE NOW HALOGEN. NEW BONNET SOUND PROOFING. NEW BONNET SEAL AND SOME COPIES OF ORIGINAL STICKERS WERE PLACED UNDER THE BONNET. MORE WORK COULD BE DONE IN THIS AREA IF YOU ARE INTO DETAILED ENGINE ETC. IT DOES HOWEVER LOOK VERY SMART AS IS.

 

BY NOW I HAD SPENT ABOUT THE SAME ON PARTS AND REPAIRS AS I PAID FOR THE CAR. I THOUGHT SPENDING £1500 WOULD DO IT. HOW WRONG CAN YOU BE? THIS SHOULD CONFIRM THAT A STAG IS NOT A CHEAP CAR TO WORK ON AND I CAN FULLY SEE WHY SOME ARE ON THE MARKET FOR £18000 PLUS! HOWEVER. I BUY AND SELL A FEW CLASSICS. ONE EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS. I GET THEM HOW I WANT THEM AND AWAY THEY GO!

A FEW OTHER BITS HAVE BEEN REPLACED SINCE THE ABOVE WORK. OIL PRESSURE SWITCH (LEAKING). OIL PUMP (SILLY NOT TO CHANGE WHEN WORKING ON THE SWITCH). NEW OR SHOULD SAY RECON CARBS. COIL AND BALLAST RESISTOR.

LAST MOT WAS FINE. NO ADVISORIES. CAR IS TAXED AND READY TO GO. INSURANCE IS CHEAP. AROUND £100 FULLY COMP WITH AGREED VALUE.

IN ITS CURRENT STATE. AND OWINGWHAT IT DOES I STILL FEEL IT IS GOOD VALUE. THERE ARE MANY CHEAP STAGS OUT THERE. BUT AS YOU WILL HAVE SEEN. THEY WILL NEED MONEY AND TIME. JUST LIKE THIS ONE DID. I WANT TO COVER MY COSTS EXCLUDING MY LABOUR. IF NOT. I CAN KEEP IT A WHILE LONGER I GUESS. ALL I CAN SAY IS - THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A CHEAP STAG!! REMEMBER THIS WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING!!

THE ORIGINAL REGISTRATION HRV 95N WILL BE ON THE CAR AS IN PHOTOS. RIGHT NOW I HAVE BIL 8220 ON IT. IF YOU WANT IT. IT WILL COST AN ADDITIONAL £750 OVER THE SALE PRICE. OTHERWISE I WILL SIMPLY PUT IT ON RETENTION AND THE ORIGINAL PLATES WILL BE ON THE CAR.

I MAY CONSIDER A PART EX. BUT VERY SPECIFICALLY IT WOULD BE AN ALFA 105 SERIES COUPE OR SPYDER OR A BENTLET T1. ONE OF THOSE IS MY NEXT PROJECT.
