This Mercedes 350SL has been barn stored for many years and has recently been dragged back into the light. I am selling it for my customer. he was given it last year by an aunt and I have spent some time investigating what it would need to turn it back into a car. Sadly this turned out to be too much for the owner and so now it is being offered for sale.
His aunt had owned the car for many years and only stopped driving it because she didn't like parking it near her work. The barn was not the driest of places and the bodywork has deteriorated quite badly. There is serious rust around the wheel arches. at the ends of the sills. the inner wings (particularly behind the headlights - there's almost no metal left). the front cross-member (under the front of the bonnet). There is also rust in odd places around the upper body. along the front edge of the hardtop. the tops of the doors. the tops of the rear wings. the rear edge of the boot lid. The bonnet has no rust at all and is very straight (small mercies and all that).
I did enough work on the engine to get it started with new oil. spark plugs. distributor cap. rotor arm. plug wires and the like. The fuel injection system was removed and cleaned up to remove any trace of waxy fuel. The fuel tank has been removed as it was filled with waxy fuel residue. it's been parts cleaned up but really needs dipping before it's put in use. A new fuel pump and filter have been installed and I ran the engine up from a can. It fired on all cylinders. in the end (probably because the fuel system wasn't priming correctly). and ran ok at idle with good oil pressure.
The brake callipers have all been removed but have not been rebuilt or replaced. The master cylinder is new. fitted by me before the work stalled.
A battery has been hooked up to check some of the electrics like lights (working and in good condition) and the windows (also working).
Some of the interior is in really quite good condition. all the carpets are present and most of it is clean. The passenger seat is very good but the driver's seat has attracted a mouse. I think. at one spot near the headrest. The door panels. dash and centre console are in very good condition. The soft top has been kept folded in it's stowage area and so has suffered somewhat but the frame is excellent.
The registration number will not be included in the sale (the owner wants to put it on retention).
I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have. you can call me on 07948 355952 during workshop hours.
