DAIMLER/JAGUAR XJC XJ COUPE 4.2 for sale

Current customer rating: current rating for this car(2.1) based on 253 votes

Welcome to the advert for the sale of my very special Daimler XJ Coupe 4. 2 automatic.

We all hear the words 'barn find' way too often! But in this case it really is true :-)

In my humble opinion this is a very. very special survivor for the various reasons I shall list in this advert.

Before I go any further I would like to point out this car will require recommisioning and some restoration work as it has been in storage for a long. long time. However. it must have been well looked after before it was parked up. It will not drive away because of the reasons I will also list.

BUT. It is without doubt one of the most original. un-messed with and un-corroded examples of an XJC there is. The fact that it is also the more desirable and much rarer Daimler version in one of the very best colours only adds to the desirability. This car should not be compared to other restoration projects that from time to time are offered for sale. The reality is that it is better than most of the MOT'd examples on the road today that are made up largely of a series of welded patches after 40 years or so of being on British roads. If you are serious about these cars. then you will know what I mean :-)

So what is the story with this car?

I am only selling it because it came as part of a collection which included a car I wanted. and I had to buy the lot! I am not a dealer. I am an enthusiast so the other cars I bought had to go. This car was never intended to be kept by me. All it needs is a loving home and a small investment to put it back on the road and turn it into one of the very best there is.

It had been in storage for many years. and came off the road with a snapped spark plug. which it still has! It was put in dry storage and remained there right up until last year when I bought it. Sadly I have no history with the car as it was a group disposal. except for the handbook. I do have the V5 which is the latest type and correctly registered in my name. I have no proof but do sincerely believe the extremely low mileage of 67 519 is genuine. It has only had 4 previous owners in its whole 40 years. You can tell it easily when you look at the condition of this car. including the interior and carpets. etc. It feels like a low mileage car.

I will try to explain and go through the whole car now to give you an idea of what it is and why it is a rare find:

The engine still turns and is free and I have no reason to believe that mechanically the car is not in good shape. It simply needs the broken spark plug removing.

Under the bonnet is entirely original. Has surface rust on inner wings. but NO corrosion. even around the battery tray. Vinyl roof is as good as the day it was made. And absolutely no tell tale bubbles under it anywhere. All roof bright work is in place. correct and in lovely order. The vinyl roof needs nothing except a clean. It really is that good.

The outer bodywork looks scruffy and the paint is flat and has had bits and pieces of paint and minor work over the years. clearly long before it came off the road. And in truth it has some minor issues. It has a rust hole in passenger side wing headlight area. and has some bubbles around wheel arches and just starting on doors. Also rear lower valance could do with replacement. as it is rusted towards the bottom where it meets the boot floor. It also has a shallow. quite large. but easily pushable dent just aft of the drivers door that somehow happened whilst it was being stored. It is not a big issue and has NOT altered the structure or panel alignment and was clearly done by a blunt object at slow speed.  SO. before you start thinking this car is the usual rust-bucket I can assure you all the issues listed here are localised. minor and not structural. I like to be totally honest and give as good a picture to you as possible. I am happy to answer any questions you have. As you can see from the pictures. the doors are in amazingly good condition. with only superficial bubbles and a small hole around the door mirror area on the drivers door. and as the rear bumper is removed you can see that even the joint between the rear quarter valance panels and the rear wing is factory fresh. Front and rear panels ahead of and behind the front and rear screens are perfect and untouched. Same around both fuel filler caps. The bumper is in the boot. No idea why it was removed. but it is with the car. The fact is that this car needs a good quality sympathetic respray. and if you include under the bonnet then you have one of the finest XJ C's in existence.

Underneath. I have not had it on a ramp. but it is still pretty easy to see the underneath is complete. original and still has it's factory applied underseal largely intact. It appears to have been treated to something like an extra Ziebart rustproofing treatment from new too. and it has clearly worked! Even the jacking points are original and I have taken pictures of the car jacked up on them to prove it. How rare is that! I have never seen another original XJ that you can say that about. let alone a coupe which usually seem to rust faster than their 4 door brothers! There is no evidence of the underneath of this car having ever been welded or messed with. All is as it should be.

The interior is nothing short of amazing. It is the factory installed green velour interior. Apart from a little sun fading in places and a small nick on the piping on the edge of the drivers seat. the interior does not look as if it has ever been sat in. All door cards and trim is in place. correct and undamaged with the exception of the small panel where the radio goes. But I have sourced another one of those that goes with the car and it is only a 5 minute job to fit. If it arrives before the car is sold I will fit it. Head lining is original and has sagged in the middle. but is undamaged and not torn so can be sorted. If you lift up the carpets in the car. apart from surface rust in places the floor pans are original and look solid and untouched. The original carpet is still in place in all areas of the interior and is still stuck down as it should be. This means that even the inner sills appear not messed with and seem original. I have never seen an original coupe interior as good as this one is. Dash lacquer is peeling. but the superior burr walnut they put only in the Daimler versions is in perfect order.

Inside the boot is complete and original as it should be. Boot floor is perfect. except for the rear seam where it joins the valance as previously mentioned. and has also clearly been rust proofed for new. You can just see it in the pictures. Spare is present and even the tool bag is present and still tied to the side of the boot compartment as it should be.

So in summary. this car needs a factory correct respray and going through sympathetically. If you do this correctly it will probably cost you 2 to 3000 pounds in all honesty. But then you have a 15 to 20 thousand. or  more car. If you know these cars and have done your homework you will know they are only original once. Very. very few in existence have the potential this one has. Most of the examples on the road have had extensive restoration and/or welding. Some better than others. The fact is that it is only very recently the value of these cars has risen significantly. therefore most running and outwardly beautiful (and now expensive cars) are hiding mediocre or even downright terrible welding and structural work. This car hides nothing. The faults it has. it clearly shows.  There are very few at any price point that can claim that!

I am under no illusion I am asking a fair price for this car. There is still a healthy margin in this car for whoever buys it to do the remedial work and either keep it. knowing you have one of the very best and most original examples out there. or to sell and still make a healthy profit. Everyone wins with this one :-) I am in no hurry to sell. but would love it to go to a good home. This car really deserves it. If it doesn't sell this time then I will simply put it back in my heated garage and offer it again next Spring when prices will no doubt have risen again! So please do not wait until auction end in the hope a discount offer will be accepted. It will not be relisted again this year. These cars are hot right now and will only get hotter as there are so few really good ones around at anything less than 12k. So get yourself a genuine bargain. I have a lot more pictures available for anyone interested.

The car is in Llandudno. North Wales.

IF IT HELPS. I AM ABLE TO HAVE THE CAR PROFESSIONALLY DELIVERED TO ANYWHERE IN MAINLAND UK AT A VERY. VERY CHEAP PRICE.

If you give me your delivery postcode. I will send you a quote based on mileage from Google Maps. The cost will be just fuel for the mileage +5%. if you are flexible on date and time. Simple as that!

Now the business bit!

PLEASE DO NOT HIT BUY IT NOW IF YOU DO NOT ACTUALLY WANT TO BUY A CAR. IT IS NOT HARD!!!!!

If you have less than 20 feedback please contact me first and convince me you are serious :-) Sorry. but there seems to be a significant number of muppets who enjoy screwing people around on EBAY these days.

1000 pounds deposit to be paid within 24 hours. Balance by bank transfer or cash. You are welcome to view the car before auction end at a mutually acceptable time. So please remember. that once you win it. you own it. and I will want payment!

I am extremely proud of my feedback. I have always had 100% feedback as a buyer and a seller. and apart from one half-wit very recently who has no understanding of what 'for spares or repair' means even when he pays less than scrap weigh in value for an item and then leaves me neutral feedback. I have always had a perfect relationship with anybody I have ever sold anything to. as you can see by my feedback. I try very hard to ensure you have all the information you require. and will go to great lengths to help and assist you. I am extremely intolerant of timewasters and messers. Be warned. you mess me around. you will be treated harshly and reported to Ebay. as previously mentioned half-wit has been.

Thank you for looking :-)

On 29-Sep-16 at 09:10:50 BST. seller added the following information:

I have just noticed that the buy it now option goes as soon as a bid is placed. What a waste of 3 quid that was. and also very inconvenient :-) However. this car is still available on a buy it now. If you are interested then please let me have your offer and we will go from there.

I would also like to point out this car is for sale elsewhere and it is extremely possible I will end this auction earlier than advertised. Thank you.
