1960 Cadillac Convertible

The 1960 Cadillac was the last flamboyant design of the 1950s/1960s.   After World War II the designers of the American automobiles had two basic formulas. one was make them bigger and two. make them more flamboyant.   This started off in a very mild form by Harley Earl with the new General Motors production cars of 1949.    Ford and Chrysler got on the program of larger and more flamboyant by 1955.   From 1955 until 1960 things got a little crazy. the cars got bigger. bigger and bigger and flamboyancy ruled the roost.

At General Motors/Cadillac Dave Holls. VP of Design. felt that Harley Earl's 1959 Cadillac had gone way off the chart and in 1960 while Harley Earl was on vacation. all the designers decided to reign in the ‘over the top' flamboyance of the 1959 and make the 1960 Cadillac competitive with the tasteful designs of Virgil Exner's Chrysler products.

To everybody's enthusiasm the 1960 Cadillac seemed to retain all the greatness of the flamboyancy and size of the Cadillacs of the General Motors products up to that time.   However the nip and tuck design changes on the 1960 Cadillac are considered by most to make it one of the most finest designs of the time.   One of the designers at GM. Mr. Roche in his own words said. “the ‘60 Cadillac has my favorite set of fins and is prettier then the ‘59 Cadillac”.   (We admit that it is a hard choice to make!)

The seller has told us that this is originally a Las Vegas car and that he bought it about 20 years ago and has always been garaged.   The fresh red clear coat paint was recently done in a sympathetic restoration.   The chrome has been replated.   There is a new leather interior with new carpet along with a new white convertible top.   The engine has a 390 cu. in. engine and an automatic transmission.   The 57. 03 miles on the odometer are believed to be original but has not been verified.   The tires are great and the car runs great.   Power:  Steering. Brakes. Windows. Seat and Antenna.

Bottom line whether you like the 1959 fins or the 1960 fins.
