1973 FORD ECONOLINE CAMPER VAN 302 V8, AUTO, PAS, PB, 61,000 MILES WITH HISTORY for sale

Reluctantly up for sale is my  E200 Econoline Turtle top camper. due to lack of use and too many toys – usual story! I am sure I am going to live to regret this.

I imported it 2 years ago from New Jersey. although it has also spent time in Ohio and Virginia. Grab yourself a cuppa put your feet up and read the rest of the listing!

This is a true survivor having only covered 61. 00 miles from new. with original chrome. and Wind Blue factory paintwork (apart from the bonnet). It comes with the original bill of sale as well as every original instruction manual for all the appliances. together with various brochures and receipts.

The purchase receipt shows that just about every option box was ticked when it was ordered from Ford. These include 302 V8. cruise-o-matic 3 speed auto. power steering. power brakes. heavy duty shocks and springs. extra cooling radiator. heavy duty alternator. ammeter + oil pressure gauges. high output cab heater. sliding side door. ull windows with openers in the rear doors and sliding door.  chrome mirrors and bumpers. horn ring. bright aluminium grille. reduced sound level exhaust. push button radio. adjustable passenger set etc etc.

The van was then passed to the Travel Equipment Corporation for one of their popular “turtle top” conversions. This involved cutting the roof off behind the cab and then re-using it as the lift up top. The original canvas sides are still present with no damage or leaks and these have openable mesh vents in each side. It is easy to erect with four levers to release inside and then just push up till it clicks. A double canvas bunk bed can be fitted in the roof area. suitable for adults or children (see photo). The conversion actually cost more than the van! My friend who is 6' 4 can comfortably stand up in it and there is bags of room with the long wheelbase body.

The kitchen area is at the rear with sink and faucet tap. Working original 12v and 120 v fridge (which has had a transformer fitted to hook up to UK 240v with UK socket tucked under the rear floor. ). a 240 v 13 amp socket is fitted. there is a Stove with two burners. and lots of storage space. including room for a leisure battery. The gas is supplied from a huge underslung LPG tank which at a guess must be around 120 litres capacity and is still almost full. I would imagine this could be used to convert the van to run on LPG. and then you could use UK Calor Gas bottles for the cooker and furnace…. oh yes it also has an additional heater for the rear. reassuringly called a furnace. We have not used this. as not needed. so not tested. When we have camped it has been surprisingly warm inside.

The long bench seat easily converts into a double bed. by pulling out a support shelf and legs. This still leaves enough room to walk past the bed and to the kitchen area. There is more storage under this with large pull out drawers. suitable for bedding and clothes. The original lino floor covering is still present. The interior is 99% original. and as such there is some wear to the cloth seat covering and a few nicks in the floor covering as you would expect. The curtains are shot but some lovely quality vintage looking material from John Lewis is included to make new ones. using the old ones as patterns. The bench seat has seat belts for rear passengers.

The cabin is all original. and is very good apart from the centre of the driver's seat squab. which is ripped. The correct material is easily available from SMS fabrics and is £40 a yard – thankfully one yard should do it!. All the gauges and switches work apart from the ammeter. A stereo with 6 X 9” speakers has been installed. although this can be removed without any damage to the vehicle. and the original steel door panel inserts come with the van where the speakers currently reside. A new headlamp switch was installed by me and H4 halogen UK headlamps have been fitted with integral side lamps. New rare clear lenses which I acquired have been added. with orange indicator bulbs. The orange side maker lamps have been converted to side flashers. with the rear red markers still operational with the lights. The rear reversing lamps have been converted to orange indicators and the tow hitch wiring has the correctly wired standard UK 7 pin socket. The ignition was converted to electronic when the van was a couple of years old and the instruction manual and receipt are present.   The electric wipers are 2 speed. Hazards are fitted from factory. The screen is a blue sundym one fitted just before it was imported.

The 302 purrs the way it did from the factory and starts first time with a prod on the pedal. with the auto choke on the 2 barrel Motorcraft carb operating as it should. Everything is easily accessible. either from the inside engine cover. which comes off with four bolts. or under the bonnet. where the service items such as battery. oil. brake. power steering top ups etc live. The column change auto box is a joy to use and the van wafts along very smoothly and quietly with plenty of overtaking power and good handling with the twin I beam independent front suspension. Brakes are excellent for stopping this 2. 5 ton van. A brand new fuel tank for a 74 model with 22 gallon capacity has just been modified to fit and installed. as the original was rusty inside and was clogging up the filters. I have just ordered a transmission filter and will change the fluid before sale.

The van is only 16' long. which is pretty damn good for an American vehicle. so can park in a normal car park space – just!  It is of course road tax exempt. 12 months MOT will be supplied before sale. Insurance is £75 a year for me on a collector's policy with 1500 miles a year. So there you go - a practical camper which attract loads of admiring comments and is a faultless drive. Would you rather have an overpriced VW splitty which is cramped. slow and common? No competition! Probably the best unrestored Econoline camper of this era in the world. You won't find another as good. which is a little worrying should I ever decide to buy another one in the future!

There is no rust on this van other than a few surface stone chip marks. The underside is rust free and never needed any repairs. The body is straight apart from one tiny historic dent hidden by a Sinclair decal on the o/s rear above the bumper. There are some cool old AAA stickers and others around the van. The body has a great shine. but please bear in mind the paint is 43 years old and has picked up the odd scratch. so don't expect a mint new vehicle!

Please don't ask what the MPG is. as I have not calculated it. and if it worries you then go and by a VW T5 !  I would guess at about 18 mpg. but of course there is the LPG option. which would effectively double that. I have access to a used kit if you are interested. This is a private sale with no part exchange and no dreamers with empty pockets please – oh and ask your wife first…… If you would like to speak about the van message me for my phone number. I will not answer texts!

If you would like to see more photos and a video of the engine running cut and paste this link into your browser. which should hopefully work. If it doesn't let me know!
