Welcome to the auction of my VW Sandrail/ UVA Fugitive MK2. For those who don't know what these are. it is a full monocoque tubular frame made in the early 80's by UVA. with beetle running gear.  It has the logbook of the beetle donor car. hence the tax exemption. For those that do. this one is a bit different. It has an adaptor plate to fit the 1800 8v mk2 Golf engine to the 1300 Beetle gearbox. This means that the possibilities for further modification are vast. most water-cooled VW engines can fit. like a 20v Turbo. or a 16v GTI. VR6. nbsp;or even a PD TDi! There was a bling one of these with a V8 for sale not long ago for £22K. I am told it is a bit unusual as it does not use the Beetle floorplan. but is a full tubular monocoque. I bought this as a rolling shell with an engine. and have completely refitted it. It was my intention to keep this as part of a fledgling car collection as ive always wanted one. I'm now trying to buy some commercial property so everything will be going to raise funds. I got it in old 2-pack epoxy primer. then I keyed it up. etch primed it. and matt-blacked the frame using high quality rattle cans.
New stuff-All wiring. All lights. LED rear clusters and front side lights. Classic chrome headlights. Zombie apocalypse spotlights. Indicator/ lights/ horn switch. All gauges and switches. All chequerplate other than roof. front road tyres. 145/70/15's. front and rear offroad tyres. Continental CrossContact AT's 205/70/15 front. Maxxis 31 x 10. 50/15's rear. front shoes. cylinders and retention kits. rear shoes. cylinders and retention kits. front hoses. front top balls. front lower rubber boots. all brake/ clutch copper pipework. master brake cylinder. master clutch cylinder. billet clutch slave cylinder. plugs/ leads/ dizzy. 2x ally rads and fan. exhaust can. Baby Moon hubcaps. 3-point harnesses. Carbon wrapped panels. air filter. extinguisher. Fuel tank. Steering damper.
The engine has had a coolant flush and oil change/ filter. There is a battery isolator switch and fuel cutoff valve. The filler hatch has a VW badge cut into it. looks rad. The rear road tyres are Pirelli Scorpions- the tread is 4-5mm all over. One of the tyres is lightly scuffed on the inside. but not an issue.
Bad points-Even though the fuel tank is new and the fuel gauge is new. it only reads 1/3 full when tank is brimming. I just fill it up after each trip. no biggie. just annoying!The oil pressure sender is new. and the gauge is new. but the needle just pegs out straight away. so the sender isn't working even though it has oil going into it. it's a new sender or something. Or just put a warning light on the dash. Slight oil leak from seal around where drive shaft comes out of gearbox. Can be fixed without removing driveshaft. doesn't bother me. all my cars drip a bit of oil!
The seats are the 70's GRP VW beach buggy seats. which were designed for people with a narrow arse. if you area big person. then you'll need some bigger bucket seats. Sparcos or something. The driver's seat adjusts forward and back. but if you are well over 6ft then you'll struggle to fit.
This is a must-have for a true petrol-head building a car collection. or a farmer needing something awesome to help round up the sheep or go lamping in. There are not many countries in the world that would let you drive something like this about legally. and it is huge fun. You have to wear goggles and face protection. so no-one can see the massive grin on your face!They are epic off-road as the tyres are huge and it only weighs about 700kgs. Nice project for fathers and sons. minor stuff you can do. It's not hugely quick. but it's quick enough for the roads where I live. You could make it very quick. my mate has a 160bhp GTI engine that he keeps trying to persuade me to fit!
I think this has potential in film or promotional work as it looks proper Mad Max/ Zombie Apocalypse.
It is a road-legal. offroad. tax exempt go-kart and drives like it. Do not expect it to drive like a 2016 Range Rover. You bid to buy. not to turn up and say you don't like the colour. or bemoan the lack of cupholders. If you are planning on driving it back to Yorkshire or Great Yarmouth then you have large brass ones. This is a dry day car without mudguards or windscreen. I always go and look at a car when bidding as everyone has a unique opinion. so come and have a look. It's in sunny Devon. TQ9. near Totnes.
