This is a wonderful rare find. The Sunbeam 18. 2 was a bored out version of the company mainstay. the Sunbeam 16hp. The increase in bore from 67mm to 70mm gave a useful 2. 98cc and was built alongside the larger engined ‘New 20'. The Sunbeam 18. 2 is accepted by the VSCC in their PVT (Post Vintage Thoroughbred) list showing just how well respected this model really is and expanding the wide range of events in which it can be used.
This fabulous. original example was first registered on the 25th July 1931 and delivered new to a Mr Ramsey of Huyton. near Liverpool where the car spent thirty six years. GP 7592 changed hands for the first time in 1967. moving across Liverpool to Wallasey staying with its second owner 43 years. The car has wonderful provenance. not just having two owners in almost seventy years. but in also retaining a mechanical history since August 1932 when the car had 11. 64 miles. The mechanical log records a complete overhaul by Challis of Manchester between the 2nd November and 10th December 1959 and records for ongoing maintenance run to 1967. The rare Sunbeam was unused from 1970 to 2010 and since 2010 the car has been treated to a top end engine overhaul including new valves. springs and guides. The sump has been removed. bearings checked. the brakes overhauled. seals and hoses replaced and the water pump modified. The Sunbeam has an almost complete tool kit including a Sunbeam tyre pump which looks unused. original handbook. Autovac booklet and some lovely original documentation including the mechanical notes since 1932. original 'buff' logbook and MOT's back to 1965. The Sunbeam is substantially original. even the paintwork although the wings were restored in 1967. Also in 1967 the carpets were replaced and the wheels painted.
Finding a car of this age so original is difficult these days. This has to be one of the most original 1930's cars we have owned and it has so much charm and patina. The car is in remarkably strong condition. likely as a direct result of the meticulous maintenance during the cars years in use. The first owner had been meticulous in keeping the vehicle records up to date and during its time off the road from 1970. the Sunbeam was dry stored and kept in fine fettle. GP 7295 has an excellent strong chassis and underside. solid bodywork. largely original paintwork that shows its age yet does not detract from what is a wonderful beautiful car. The car has been treated to some brightwork over the years and has recently been fitted with new tyres. The interior is wonderful with a delightful patina. The upholstery is a clear indication of how well the car has been cared for and maintained. The inside of the Sunbeam retains quality. luxury and a wonderful honest feel.
The Sunbeam boasts a strong engine. robust gearbox and generally very good mechanicals. Brakes have been recently overhauled. the car drives incredibly well with good performance coming from the 16hp engine and this is a pre-war that can be regularly used and has proven reliable. GP 7295 comes with a VSCC eligibility document from 2011 and is certainly capable of long distance touring and regular use. This is not a show car. but an incredibly usable Sunbeam that has to be one of the most original of its type left in existence. The car has everything in terms of originality. provenance. paperwork. reliability. usability and of course the quality and luxury coming from a top class British manufacturer of its day. This is an unrepeatable opportunity not to be missed. Finding a car of this age so original is difficult these days.
