JAGUAR E-TYPE S2 DHC L/H/D

Just repatriated from sunny 'Marina del Rey' on the California coast

This car was lately owned & run by my brother who lives in California USA. He was having trouble getting anyone with experience to work on the car over there so had it shipped to me in the UK as I run a restoration business specialising in classic Jaguars.

We have been through the car in the workshop. replacing steering joints & bushes. doing wiring jobs. fixing the lights & getting everything up to UK MoT standard. My brother has now decided to sell the car. The E-Type has UK paperwork & is currently registered to myself. but is still owned by my brother.

It is a smart. sound. useable E-type. it is not immaculate & has never been restored. It is 41 years old so there are marks on the paint & the odd small dink & dent. there is evidence of use & wear throughout. but the car is complete. it runs & drives well & is ready to go anywhere.

The underbody is straight & sound with no rust. We have just replaced the floor pans as they had begun to perforate. The rest of the body is really sound with no rot or rust - even the factory steel brake pipes are like new.

The engine is healthy with decent oil pressure. The 4-synchro gearbox is good. The car drives well & pulls like a train. Valuable & correct triple SU carbs fitted NOT Strombergs as most US spec cars were!

The interior is used. but smart & tidy. the leather seats are in remarkable condition for a Californian car.

I could spend ages documenting every detail of the car. the good bits & the not quite so good bits. but by far the easiest thing is to come & look for yourself. see the car. hear it. smell it. drive it.

This is an ideal car either as a budget E-type to use with minimal expenditure or to carry out a complete. correct. nose to tail restoration as it has all the little details that are so often missing or damaged all still present & correct.

The original colour was Gunmetal metalic silver grey  - the car has obvously been white for many many years.

I'd love to restore this car properly. back to it's original colour. make it RHD. rebuild the mechanics & give it a 5-star repaint. this is what I do everyday. maybe I can give you an estimate?

Hi. Given that you have a good feel for the condition of the car. what would you estimate (Roughly) it would cost to undertake a full restoration. however I would like to maintain the car as a LHD vehicle. Regards Alastair**************************************** Hello Alastair. It's one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions really. To make a proper job (which is the only kind to do) One would need to address every aspect of the car. full mechanical rebuild. body & paint restoration & interior re-trim. The devil is always in the detail & this is where the time & money goes. One could probably 'ecconomise' on certain aspects of the job but my experience in the business tells me that this is seldom a wise move & can often end up coming back to 'bite' you later. On the other hand a restoration could be embarked upon in sections; The running gear one year. the body & paint another. & the interior at a later time. in order to spread the cost. So realistically I see this car falling into one of 3 categories; 1) A budget car that can be run & used as-is. One which. whilst not perfect in any respect is perfectly useable & respectable & may well appeal to someone who lives abroad or has a holiday home on the Continent. 2) A car which may well appeal to the experienced 'Home restorer' who has experience of other makes or models & wishes to extend their skills & build a beautiful E-type roadster. Who needs a really good solid straight car complete with all original details on which to start. Ideally one which can be used & run before embarking on a major project. 3) Someone wanting a top-flight fully restored E-Type who didn't want to pay the £120K price tag of some of the big name restorer/retailers in the south of the country. Who wanted a car built to their own specification & wanted to be involved in it's evolution. who. again. needed a good sound straight basis on which to base their 'dream-car' Hope this helps! Phil (PS A full end to end rebuild by a good quality indepedent restorer (such as ourselves) would be about £35-£40K) My apologies to anyone reading this I have used correct spacings in my writing but eBay's system has stripped them out when loading this onto the site! Thats why this looks like one long sentence! Sorry!
