By 1956 Mercury was using many styling cues from the Ford Motor Company dream cars (concept cars) to put on their production cars.   At that time Mercury was the favorite division for advanced styling and that can be seen very evidently in this very rare 1956 Mercury Montclair Phaeton.   The term phaeton would normally indicate that the car would be a convertible in the 1930s. so one of the clever marketing guys decided to use the term for the brand new Montclair four door hardtop sedan.

Yes. four door hardtops were the brand new thing in 1956. not only at Ford but also at General Motors.   The beauty of the 1956 Mercury Montclair Phaeton is that it had all sorts of delightful styling trim features.   The word Phaeton even appears on the rear doors.   The chrome band going around the rear of the roof is a direct descendant of a Ford Motor Company dream car.   These Montclairs were just fully decorated with all sorts of chrome trim such as the side chrome trim. the chrome trim on the rear roof previously mentioned. the flipper hubcaps. the chrome trim on the rocker panels.   The absolutely most fantastically designed tail lights that any Ford. Mercury or Lincoln ever had.   This car even has the factory European driving lights. The hooded headlights came off of one of Ford's dream cars as well as the highly attractive dashboard.

Further we would like to bring to your attention the fabulous color scheme of this car. absolutely our favorite color pick for this model of car.   Of course the car as you can see is equipped with fender skirts. power windows.

The underside is not detailed for show but is very tidy.   When you take a look at the side view of this car you start to wonder if the 1956 Montclair four door hardtop isn't actually better looking from the side then the two door hardtop.

The current owner of this car has owned it since 1991 and purchased it because in 1956 he had purchased the exact same model and after owning it for several years. sold it.   His wife said. “if you are going to buy a collector's car. I would love to have back our original 1956 Mercury Montclair Phateon that we had when we first got married”.    So he spent a long time looking for the best Montclair Phaeton that he could find and this is the car he found.   We think he did a very good job finding this car.

The owner has driven this car every year when the weather is beautiful.

The only upgrade on this car is the wide white radials (make the car handle like a modern car) a new exhaust and an electric fan with a AM/FM Cassette mounted in the glove box.   Other then that the car is darn close to being as original as it left the factory.

The private seller tells us that believes that if the turquoise and white paint is not original it may have been repainted.

Original 312 c. i. engine.   Automatic transmission.

Radio is not functional but there is an AM/FM Cassette in the glove box.   The clock is not currently working.

The auxiliary fan on radiator has a toggle switch on the dash by the steering column.

Seller tells us that the interior is amazing and the headliner looks like new.

The private seller tells us that the car often wins trophies for “best original” car at the local shows.

Note this car is not equipped with air conditioning.

If you are looking for a fantastic tour car with all of the power equipment – power steering. power brakes. power windows. power seats.   We think that you will really enjoy this car.   To top that off. in our opinion. we know that this is the best possible color scheme you can have for this car.   Furthermore. in our opinion. it is the best looking four door hardtop compared to any other manufacturer during the mid 1950s.   four door hardtops were the thing. General Motors had them for every division and Ford jumped on the band wagon and final result is this absolutely fabulous collector car.   This is definitely a car that you should spend all your energy to bid to win and be happy that you did!

When you find a car that has had so much love from its current owner you know its going to be a great car.
