1982 Audi 100 GL 5E (Audi C2) Automatic

This is a rare opportunity to buy a car which has very low mileage for its year and is in extremely good mechanical condition having had considerably more than £10. 00 spent on it in the last 18 months. I am only selling because I have purchased a similarly low mileage Quattro A8. According to How Many Left there are just 17 of these automatic GL 5Es on the road.

It must be pointed out that the interior of the car is not good. The carpets are worn and do not match from front to rear. I have a complete new carpet set (for a LHD car) but it has not been fitted. There are some broken bits of trim and it looks as if a dog may have chewed the gear lever. We spent some time cleaning the interior and on a hot day when it is cooked up inside it actually smells quite nice!

The car is known. on the Classic Audi Forum as the Dublin Audi. It went from this country to Dublin some time ago and. as far as I can tell. sat unused in a barn as it had a problem with the fuel injection and would not start.

I bought the car last year and had it delivered to Mario Grech-Xerri of Go Performance Cars in Tolworth.  Surrey. He is a total guru where anything mechanical is involved and rebuilt the engine and got it going as detailed below.

Invoice 8th. June 2015:  Ken Mills recondition service: 1 metering unit / 1 airflow sensor / 1 warmup regulator / 5 injectors / Iridium spark plugs / Duracell high capacity battery + a few other bits.   

Total cost  £1. 20. 65

Invoice 16th. July 2015:  Front & rear dampers / brake shoes / cylinders / hoses / discs & pads / wheel bearings / trailing track control arms / radiator / belt & tensioner kit / head gasket set / water pump / cylinder bolt set / 10 Mahle valves / Mahle pistons & ring set / Mahle big ends.  

Total cost  £2. 02. 16

Invoice 24th. July 2015:  Engineering work to third party: Precision bespoke Colsibro valve guides / removal / fit & hone to take new valves / re-cut inlet &exhaust seats / head wash & crack tested / valve clearance tappet shims.   

Total cost  £577. 50

Invoice 4th. August 2015:  Thermostat / brake fluid / antifreeze / MOT etc.  

Total cost  £426. 21

Description of work done:  Audi 100

Initial work comprised of the removal of the front sub frame and all suspension components on the front of the car. The components were replaced and the sub frame was then rebuilt.

The front brake calipers were initially taken off. sent away for a rebuild to a specialist and returned to me as they couldn't get the parts to rebuild them. As a result of this. I had to rebuild the calipers myself with new seals. which I luckily had.

We fitted new discs new brake pads. hoses. brake lines replace dampers and tracking.

Rear:  Install new rear brake shoes. cylinders. flexi hoses. shock absorbers. reassemble with new rear wheel bearings.

We stripped off the injection components and sent them away for servicing at a specialist.

Fuel pump was rewired and the mountings were replaced.

Flush fuel tank and all lines.

(The fuel pump may need replacing as it's now started to sound noisy. after I have driven it for a few days. ) (This was done later).

Refit injection components. test run and condemn the engine. At this point there was a lot of rattling and seizure/scraping noise.   Dismantle engine and rebuild with at least 70% new components.

The Head:  New Guides were made to fit and new valves were fitted. Seats cut and lapped. Camshaft polished from rust. Head fully assembled and re-shimmed. The block was micro honed and fitted with new pistons and bearings. New oil pump was also fitted. All fitted with new gaskets seals and cam-belt.

Re fit manifolds. fit new radiator. water pump. thermostat and all other auxiliaries

Finish. Get running. bleed brakes take for MOT.

A lot of time was spent sourcing components (most from Germany)

After testing I noticed that the auto box sometimes locks on reverse. Please select neutral and select reverse again. then its fine. The auto box is going to need looking at.   (Change of fluid - again - seems to have resolved this problem).

Oil and filter change. £24 / Wiper blades £18

Please note this is a summary. as I haven't mentioned every nut and bolt that we haven't been able to take off and so on.   However. there were numerous seized nuts. items to be sawn off. welding of body work etc; the list is exhaustive. but I'm sure you get the picture from our discussions and emails.   Hours counted to do all this work is 98 hours sometimes two people were working at once. @ £50 an hour.

Next stop was Zero Exhausts in Ashford for a stainless steel exhaust.

I expect I have forgotten something. It had 4 new winter tyres last year as I do not use it in the summer.
