The word "barn find" is very overused. but this is the real thing. This 1933 MG J2 has lain unknown in a garage in Northern California for 39 years. I found it in February of this year. and it is now back in the UK.
The car was bought in 1971 by a USAF Officer who was stationed at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk. He used it to drive between the various airbases in East Anglia. In 1973 he was transferred to Brussels as the demonstration pilot on the F16 that was being sold to European countries. He had already completed five tours of duty in Vietnam. In 1974 he returned to the States and he took his J2 with him. He registered the car in California with the number 33MGJ2. Very cool. He drove it a couple of times and put in his garage. it was never used again. He passed away twelve years ago. I bought the car from is widow.
The engine is a Ford 10 unit mated to the original box. This was a very common conversion it seems as the two bearing MG engines were very fragile. The only thing that is missing is the speedo. His widow told me her husband took it out to be repaired many years ago. Apart from that the car is totally complete and rust free including sidescreens which are fine. and a hood that isn't. There is even a Users Manual.
It gets better. When I got the MG my friend and I had it running within a couple of hours. It runs. changes gear and stops. There is a video of the MGs' first drive in nearly forty years. The tyres you see in the photos haven't been touched since I discovered the car. they didn't need pumping up. Quite incredible! The car is less of a barn find more of a time capsule back to 1974. The restoration of the car would be very easy. it's really a paint job unless you want to go back to original specs. My preference would be to keep it exactly as it is. A direct link back to 1971. stack heel shoes. flares. strikes and petrol at 33p a gallon.
The car will be supplied with California title. copy of the buff logbook (the original was lost in Belgium by the authorities in 1973)  and HM Customs paperwork. All taxes have been paid and it is ready to register.  The Triple M register didn't know of this undiscovered gem and it has been allotted their number 3552.
This is a serious car for serious collectors. so please no fantasists or tyre kickers. Inspection is welcomed. You won't find another one like this for a long. long time. if ever.
