1961 Jaguar Mk.II with 4.2 Engine and 5-Spd Gearbox for sale
This special Jaguar Mk. II is the former property of the late Jeff Uren. retired BSCC driver famed for his engineering and tuning skills which led to his renowned work with the Ford Cortina Mk. II Savage and Ford Capri Stampede which remain a hit with Ford buffs to this day.
He bought this car in Chignell. Bedfordshire in January 2000 after the then-owner had invested many ££'s and close to two years having the car restored by Flying Cat Engineering of Royston. Herts. There is photographic record of the extent of the restoration. but it included cutting-out and repairing and welding new sections. front cross member. crow's feet. stays. front valance. sills. floor sections. rear wheel arches. doors. rear valance. boot lid. spring hangers. inner wheel arches and splash panels. and also to strip. prepare and respray the car in original colour British Racing Green. All this work took from April 1996 to the finishing touch headlining in 1998.
From the Spring of 2000 after owning the car for just a handful of months. Jeff started to identify problems with the original 3. 4 engine. It was reported to be running too limply when cold. then running too hot and burning oil. etc. Peter Cooper from CooperCraft was consulted throughout. By October 2000. a solution was discussed and a decision made; At Jeff's instruction. the team at CooperCraft would fit a healthy 4. 2 engine from a Jaguar 420G and a 5-speed Getrag gearbox to the Mk. II. Driving this car today. it's a wonder every Mk. II owner hasn't done it!
The transformation from other 3. 4's is remarkable. The security you feel from being able to keep up with modern traffic means you're bound to get remarkable use from this car any day of the year. Thanks also to some later modifications from CooperCraft including replacing the brake servo and reservoir valve the car stops as you would expect. pulling up tight and in a straight line. Upgrades to the front sub frame. new bushes. new front chassis legs. coil springs. and shock absorbers also add to the overall solid feeling you return from the car on the road.
Bearing in mind this car is some 55 years old. it truly is a credible alternative to a modern car as a ‘daily driver'. The term is banded often. but has never been so worthy. Being a closed cabin car with plenty of space. little road noise but still no doubt of the privilege to be enjoying a classic car. we're confident it's a car your whole family can enjoy with you. wives' included.
Sadly. Jeff contracted cancer aged 81 in late 2005. As a result he sold many assets. including this Jaguar in February 2006 to his neighbour. a local garage owner. Jeff died in April 2007. but his car lived on with his friend and neighbour being enjoyed for ten years and countless family weddings until we were fortunate to be able to buy this car.
This Jaguar has just four former keepers and is accompanied by its original registration number and original Manufacturer's Warranty showing delivery via A. J. Beal of Exeter to one Dr. D. M Green of Sidmouth on 26th July 1961. It also has two sets of keys. current MOT to March 2017 and a host of past MOT's. not to mention the many invoices for restorative and maintenance works over the years.
Very few classic cars feel so tight and up-together as this car. The timeless BRG with Tan leather interior has aged gracefully. and the fact that this car hasn't been restored to perfection. is exactly what makes it ‘perfect' in our eyes….
