1975 Toyota Mark II Corona MX20 - very low mileage and rare pillarless coupe that gives a nod to the coke bottle styling of many early 70's US muscle cars. Presented in of-its-time metallic dark brown! A really nice alternative classic to the more common coupe's from the 70's. I believe this could be the only MX20 in the country. I don't know what people have tucked away but it's safe to say you're not going to see another one!
Plenty of photos below if you don't want to read all my bumph. In short it's a good working MOT'd Mark II that's ready to go anywhere. Imported myself from Japan. Rust free.
Mechanicals
Original 2L "M" 6-cylinder engine. Runs very well and is exceptionally clean. Pulls strongly and delivers its power correctly. The M series engines were used in the Crown and went on to become the choice for the Supra. the 7M being the last of the generation in the MK3.
Gearbox works well and selects all 4 gears. As a 4 speed it's perfectly responsive and suitable for normal driving. On the long cruise a 5th gear would be desirable. This is the W40 box. If you can source a W50 it's a straight swap and gives an extra gear. I believe W55 and W58's can be made to fit but I'm not sure what's involved.
A majority of the consumables were fairly new when I acquired the vehicle. In my ownership its' had new plugs. plug leads and fluids along with some steering components.
Disc brakes up front. drums on rear. They give a better read out on the MOT machine than my Supra ever does!
Body
For a 40 year old Japanese car it's in incredible condition. There is no rot and never has been. The underside has been painted. I imagine many years ago and it has preserved it perfectly. I've never seen a 70's Japanese car this smart. at least not one that hasn't been restored. Panels are all straight and gaps correct.
The paint is mostly original and a bit tired on the roof. Likewise there's a few thin spots on the bonnet and boot. If you wanted a pristine example. the bonnet/roof/boot want flatting and respraying. I left it as I was going to change the colour. People begged me not to so I ended up doing nothing. It polishes up OK and kind of adds to the cars original character.
Chrome is tidy all round. Wheel trims. lights. lenses. plastics - they are all in excellent condition.
Interior
Much like the rest of the car. the interior is tidy and original. There's no noticeable wear. burns or marks on the seats. It smells like the 70's (in a good way!). Dash lights up and all the dials read correctly. The radio works. I've been using a little gadget in the 12v socket to play MP3's wirelessly through the stereo. New Sony speakers in the back covered by the original grills.
All 4 windows are electric and work. Heater and vents work. Electric trunk release. Wing mirrors are cable operated from little knobs near the ignition. There's a "brake check monitor" to indicate if there's any faults before you set off! There's even a period Galaxy A/C system. Seems to function but I imagine you can no longer get the gas.  There's a factory installed 8 track which I can't test as I don't have a tape and a crack on the top of the dash pad (see pic below).
History
This was a two owner car in Japan and then me. I can trace the mileage (KM) back to 2011 when it was 30. 00KM. Now on 31. 00KM (19. 00 miles). The condition of the car clearly shows this is a low mileage vehicle. I very much doubt its' gone round the clock as there's not enough wear but I have nothing to prove it's genuine. I bought it on condition. If it's true then it's likely one of the lowest examples of its kind.
Other Info
MOT until May 26th 2017. Advisory item replaced. Free road tax - woohoo!
Consumable parts can be purchased from Rockauto and no doubt other places. The Mark II shared a lot with the Crown and Corona both 'Stateside and over here.
Came third the other week at Beaulieu's annual Japanese event of 1200 cars. Not bad when the competition was a fantastic Honda NSX. If you live in Penzance or Carlisle and wonder if it'll make it back; Beaulieu is 250 mile round trip for me. I had no problems and a third of a tank left.
