1982 VOLVO 760 GLE V6 MANUAL – UNIQUE IN AUSTRALIA?

12 YEARS IN STORAGE. LOW MILEAGE. DRIVING WELL

BELIEVED TO BE THE ONLY RHD 6-CYL MANUAL LEFT IN THE WORLD!

This car was built only a few months after the 760 was introduced. has an early chassis #. and came as a 4-speed + Overdrive Manual. Histories/ specifications of the 760 V6 rarely list a manual O/D gearbox as even being available. The GLE. as the Top-of-the-line luxury Volvo with a 2. 8 litre OHC V6. has an Automatic as standard fitment. No V6 manuals were sold in Australia.

This car was sold in the UK – and the UK website “HowManyLeft” lists only 1x1982 & 1x1983 still in existence! Both of these V6's are assumed to be automatics. Where else would you find a RHD manual? Perhaps NZ or South Africa? The manual gearbox totally changes the feel & performance of the car. making it much more interesting.

GOOD POINTS: Plush deep velour upholstery. good carpet. excellent uncracked dash. good boot (both in size & condition). As the luxury version it has Air Conditioning (missing its belt & a pipe but compressor turns). Central Locking & Power Windows. Power Steering & Alloy Wheels.

Drives well with responsive & quiet motor. good clutch & gearshift. light power steering & good brakes. And it is an ideal tow car as it has heavier duty rear springs. shocks & a tow bar.

Has only travelled 74. 98 MILES in the hands of two long-term owners. It even has a file of annual MOT (Roadworthy) certificates to verify this! This distance is nothing for a Volvo. where 200-300. 00 klms are the norm.

To re-commission the car after it's long storage I have undertaken the following work:

Fitted 2nd hand Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection system

Fitted 2 new fuel pumps – both in-line + in-tank units

Fitted complete 2nd hand exhaust system

Sourced 2nd hand centre caps for the alloy wheels

Fitted new gas struts to boot

Oil & filter change

Including labour. this adds up to much more than my opening price!

BAD POINTS: It has RUST scabs to several panels (see below) & RUST perforation to A) base of the boot wells on each side – a common 740/760 fault B) rear of the RH sill.

LEFT SIDE: Bubbles to base of front guard. to rear door & rear wheel arch

RIGHT SIDE: Scabs to both doors. bubbles to front guard & rear wheel arch

REAR: The boot slam panel & RH corner below the tail light have corrosion

These imperfections are mostly cosmetic rather than structural. And there is HAIL DAMAGE to the roof. bonnet & boot lid – this could be removed with a dent-master or similar. There are also keyed scratches on the RH side. While the original paintwork has held up well. the car needs a RESPRAY to do it justice. And it will need a NEW BATTERY.

SUMMARY: This car should be saved & preserved. It is an early build example of an important Volvo model (the 740 & 760 were their mainstay in the 1980s & early 90s). And it is UNIQUE in having the manual gearbox option coupled to the V6 engine (only the 4cyl models were readily available with manual transmission). Mechanically it is strong & has an excellent interior. But it is let down by the bodywork. Attention to the rust & hail dents. followed by a new coat of paint. would transform this car into something worthy of any Volvo collection.

I'm asking a modest amount of money. significantly less than the cost of freight from the UK (if you could find another!) And the recent re-commissioning work exceeds the opening price.

The car is now over 30 years old so compliance & registration in any state is straight forward. A copy of the FORS import permit will be provided. I am now retired & have other projects to keep me occupied so I will never get around to this one – hence the sale.

Please note where it is – Crookwell NSW which is 45 klms west of Goulburn. which in turn is 2 ½ hours south of Sydney. Clearly it is not registered so you will need either a trailer or transporter to collect. Please consider this before bidding. I can give some advice on carriers.

The usual Ebay rules apply. you are bidding to buy. not to inspect. change your mind or haggle over price. Payment only by electronic transfer or cash please. NO Paypal or other methods.

I am a long-term Ebayer with extensive & positive feedback – 16 years – when there was only an Ebay US site!
