Development of the 1967-69 Z/28 302 cubic inch small block V8 “Zapper"
In 1967. Chevrolet was busy promoting their new pony car. the Camaro. and part of the promotional efforts included racing the Camaro in the SCCA Trans-Am series. In order to make the Camaro competitive. Chevrolet introduced the Z/28 option package which included among other things. a special 302 cubic inch small block. The engine size was a result of the SCCA's 305 cubic inch displacement limit in the Trans-Am series at the time. The 302 turned out to be one of Chevrolet's finest small block offerings. and the engine stood in stark contrast to the ever increasing size of the big blocks used in the muscle cars of the day.
The racing technology went towards creating a production small block rated very conservatively at 290 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 290 ft. lbs. of torque at 4200 rpm. Rumor has it. however. that the same engine produced 350 horsepower at 7000 rpm on the dynamometer! Why would Chevy underrate the engine? Certainly insurance reasons come to mind. along with the desire to understate what the engine was capable of lest the various racing sanctioning bodies penalize the teams that chose to run the Z/28 in competition.
Road tests of the day praised the engine that Chevy put together. While most testers found the lack of "bottom end" power a nuisance. the 302 more than made up for that shortcoming with a very strong top end rush. One tester likened the pull of the Z/28 in the upper rpm range as being similar to a 426 Hemi! That's high praise indeed for an engine with two-thirds the displacement. Quarter mile times were in the low to mid 14-second bracket. depending upon the conditions the test was performed under. Modified 302s used in Trans-Am racing generated in the neighborhood of 450 horsepower. which is an amazing amount of power from 302 cubic inches with enough reliability to win SCCA championships in 1968 and 1969.
The 302 powered Z/28 was very successful in both NHRA drag racing and SCCA Trans-Am racing from 1967 to 1969. The Penske team with Mark Donahue dominated the Trans-Am series in 1968 and 1969 (winning manufacturer's championships for Chevrolet). while in 1968 Dave Strickler won the IHRA Super Stock world title in a 302 powered Z/28. That the engine and thus the car was so successful so soon after its release is a testament to the effort that went into the project by Chevy's engineers. It is. without a doubt. one of the all-time great small blocks produced by Chevrolet.
——My car:
This 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 started it's life in Nevada. The first owner sold it to a guy in California who just bought it to flip it (so really it is a two-real-owner car). I bought it about five years ago with the intention of restoring it to show condition. The body was extremely straight and rust free. The restoration began three years ago. I stripped the body down to bare metal there was not a single rust hole or patch anywhere on the body. The bodywork and prep before paint was extensive. You won't see another black quite like this- it's rich and deep with a killer shine. After doing the body I put a whole new OEM interior in the car. Rosewood steering wheel is original.
Less than 2. 00 miles ago I had the engine machined. balanced. rollerized and upgraded to full racing specification at a shop in Langley BC. It dyno'd to 425hp and revs to 8. 00 rpm without any trouble. All parts that went into the build are high performance. Brakes and fuel system overhauled and restored. Hoses. etc etc etc… You name it. I did it. It has four wheel disc brakes.
This is the original. numbers matching engine block. with the original numbers matching transmission and rear end. I did change the gear ratio to 3. 43. but have the original 4. 11 gears that come with the car.
I'm selling because I love restorations and am now elbow-deep into a ‘70 Chevelle. It will be finished before summer and the Zapper has to go. You won't find another like it. I've restored muscle cars my whole life and had all the right people working on this car. It sounds incredible. See for yourself here: https://youtu. be/uh9vuhE9gAI
The photos show condition accurately. There isn't a dent or a chip on the car. Chrome shows very well. Glass is clear. Dash and centre console are clean and not cracked. You'd have a very hard time faulting anything here. Summer is around the corner. don't miss this Z…

There is NO duty for this US built car to return to America. If you come pick it up in person. you don't pay any fees at the border. If you have it sent down by a commercial carrier a brokerage fee would have to be paid (probably around $500 at most). I can assist with getting the car to Blaine. Washington or help you make plans to come pick it up. The weather is great here right now and you'd have no problem driving the car as it is now from here California or Ohio or where-ever you may be.
