This vehicle. chassis number ‘7639S'. is a 3rd Series RLS manufactured shortly after September 1923 and together with its sister car. chassis number ‘7638S'. was imported by the Australian distributor. Overseas Motors. in January 1924. Both cars were imported as driveable chassis complete with scuttle. bonnet. wings. lights and dashboard. Built in Australia. the bodies were modelled along the lines of cars illustrated in contemporary factory brochures.

‘7639S' was discovered on a farm in Victoria after the Second World War and only one previous owner was recorded. a local dentist. The second owner (and discoverer of the vehicle) retained the Alfa for many years until its purchase for the Lance Dixon collection in 1971. Lance Dixon arranged for some restoration to be undertaken and the car was finally purchased for display at the York Motor Museum in Western Australia in 1980. This car carries its original restored coachwork.

When production started in 1923. two models were available; the touring chassis RL Normale with a 2. 16 cc overhead-valve engine. and the RL Sport (or RLS) featuring a 2. 94 cc dry sump engine. twin carburettors and a shorter chassis. The RLN had a flat radiator. while the RLS featured a pointed one and carried two Alfa Romeo badges. one on each side of the central point. The badge incorporated a viper. which formed the coat of arms of the city of Milan. while the laurel wreath was not added until 1925. when the P2 Grand Prix car won the World Championship at Monza for Alfa Romeo.

This Alfa Romeo RLS is finsihed in Red with black wings. To the interior is black leather with matching black carpets. Being a dry sumped engine it is essential to turn on the oil feed from the bulkhead mounted oil tank prior to starting. With three litres & twin Zenith carburetors. this car gives a good turn of speed & is surprisingly quick showing its racing pedigree. It is also clad with luxurious coachwork allowing for transport of 4 peoplle in considerable comfort. It compares very very well with a 3. 0 Litre Bentley for example but with a far more Italian flair.
