1931 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Barker Limousine de Ville 182GY

A really handsome. well-proportioned car from the heyday of motoring elegance. in correct. sound & very appealing condition. Rather shabby cosmetically in some respects & would benefit from some attention to paintwork. but the car is tremendously appealing & drives just as a PII should. with smooth performance. delightful. precise and light steering. it is an insight into how these cars must have felt when new. Features include a lovely full set of original stainless steel lamps with Barker dipping mechanism. riveted bonnet. rear-mounted spare wheel & more besides. Several years. but just a few hundred miles ago. the engine was fully overhauled by Ristes of Nottingham. using a new cylinder head & blocks at a cost of approximately £40. 00! It is now just sttling in nicely. running very smoothly & sweet. Other work has included a radiator re-core. Autovac overhaul. new clutch. etc. etc. and various other attention. Complete with original handbook from 1931. most of its tools. including the wheel spanner which appears never to have been used & most of the small tools in their original running board trays. Well documented history includes a lovely record of the purchase of the car by Jimmy Skinner in 1957 for £125! The value has increased somewhat since then. but very good value for money. particularly considering recent expenditure. Unfortunately. the car lost its original registration number in the 1990s. but we are more than happy to help source and apply a more suitable number than the 'age related' one that it currently wears.

Snippets: The Castle Beare Connections & the sisters who married brothers!
182GY was delivered to Charles Amherst Robertson at the family home of Castle Bar House in Ealing. This very grand house has also been known as Castle Bear. Castle Beare & Castle Hill House with earlier occupiers including Thomas & Elizabeth Smith (1790s) – in 1814 their daughter Elizabeth-Mary Smith married Sir Henry Meux (1770/1841) & 3 of their children married nobility – Marianne-Frances to Sir William Bowyer-Smith. Emma-Martha to Sir Malden (de Vere Campbell family) & their brother Henry Meux marrying Lady Louisa Brundell-Bruce. By 1871 Castle Bar House was home to Charles Thomas Amherst (Jeweller) & his family - family connections include Charles's brother – William Strowan (known as Father Algy). Charles Amherst Villiers an automotive engineer who developed the super-charger & designed the land speed car “Blue Bird” for Malcolm Campbell. Charles Villiers who also lived in Ealing. was a close friend of Ian Fleming & in the film Casino Royale. Bond drives a 4 ½ litre Bentley fitted with the Amherst-Villiers supercharger! When Charles married Sarah Amherst he adopted the surname of Amherst Robertson. Sarah's older sister Lucy Ann was married to Charles' older brother William Robertson –so the sisters & brothers were their own in-laws! Sarah & Charles had no children and when Charles died in 1935 the ownership of 182GY was transferred to his widow. Sarah kept the car until 1957 when. after the death of her chauffeur she decided to sell the car. It was duly inspected by Jimmy Skinner and it would appear after a discussion with the butler that the local “funeral people” had an interest in the car. the butler promised to let Mr. Skinner know what their offer was. This he did and also revealed that the lady was not keen on it being cut up for a hearse. Mr Skinner suggested to the butler that he would be prepared to offer £125 – the butler assured him that that ample and he could collect the car when he liked! An article on the acquisition of 182GY was published in the RREC Bulletin in 1969 – it is worth knowing that the price of £125 included. 6mths tax. insurance. full tank of fuel and almost new tyres on the car! Sarah Robertson passed away in May 1964 & in September 1964 Castle Bar House & its' entire contents - paintings. prints. silver. books & furniture. after having been within the family for 100 years was put up for auction. the house itself was later demolished.
