By the mid-1960s. the Jaguar E-Type was appealing to the man
with a young family but who were restricted by the size of the
current Jaguar E-Type coupé and its open topped sibling. This
prompted Jaguar to offer a third option in the form of a 2+2 coupé.
By adding nine inches to the wheelbase and two inches in height. it
was then possible to fit a rear seat capable of seating two adults
in tolerable comfort. Of course the rear seat was more suited to
children or. as 'The Motor' put it at the time. the car could
'extend Dad's youth for another seven years'. Robert Bell in Motor
was quoted as saying at the time that "all we expected to try was a
new engine but what in fact we drove was a new car. Not a yowling. br/>aggressive Ferrari-like machine with which. perhaps. most people
associate a V12 engine but a very smooth. quiet and refined grand
touring sports car. "

We are pleased to offer this 1972 example of a V12. 2+2
fixedhead coupé which requires light restoration. Originally
a lefthand drive example. it was exported to the USA but was
re-imported to Scotland in 1990 before the new owner took it to
France for a year. Back in Scotland it changed ownership. br/>which is reflected in the MoT test certificates for 1993 to
1997. The current Scottish owner bought the car in 1997 and
had it converted to righthand drive by E-Type specialist M&C
Wilkinson of Doncaster. After enjoyable trouble free touring. br/>including a trip to Switzerland. the car was recorded 'off-road' in
2000 due to other commitments. It has been stored since in
the owner's private garage and regularly cleaned. polished and the
engine run to temperature. Today. this V12 E-Type is
presented in its original Old English White livery with contrasting
black leather interior. The coachwork is reported to be
straight with a few blemishes requiring some light work. The rear
axle was rebuilt in 1999; however. all the suspension and brakes
are in need of refurbishment. The engine starts and quickly
settles into a smooth and reassuring idle whilst displaying very
good oil pressure. the manual gearbox operated smoothly; however. br/>the clutch hydraulics are now also in need of attention. The
interior is in good original order with relined roof trim and a
history file containing the original US service book. various
customs and other paperwork from this car's history including more
recent receipts. This is an attractive and usable example for
anyone prepared to apply some TLC and quickly enjoy the reward of
Jaguar's sublime V12 motoring.
