The lineage of the Mk. II can be directly traced back to its
predecessor. the 2. 4 saloon. or Mk. I as it would become known in
later years. This sporting saloon. designed to fill the gap in
Jaguar's range between the XK sports and voluminous Mk. VII. br/>entered the market in 1956. Power came from the legendary XK
straight six. twin cam. engine in 2483cc form. The 2. 4 was notable
as being a complete break away from the previous designs of (Sir)
William Lyons and Co. . and was their first foray into the modern
world of monocoque construction. Traditional Jaguar buyers would
not feel alienated by the new offering from Coventry however. as
the interior was up to their usual standards. with leather and
walnut being the order of the day. Rather than introduce a
completely brand new car. Jaguar successfully re-designed the car
from stem to stern. and the Mk. II was born. debuting in 1959. The
chunky windscreen pillars of the early car were replaced by slimmer
offerings giving a much more airy cabin. which both improved the
styling and freshened up the design for the new decade.

This superb example was originally registered to Mr L. H. Odell of
Windsor. Berkshire in February 1962 and has had four owners over
its life. covering a mere 26. 00 miles in that time. The current
vendor purchased the Jaguar from Martin Jol with the intention of
making it a present for his father. The car was taken to Jaguar
restorer Lee Scott for recommissioning where it was pronounced to
be a superb and very original example. The car was fitted with a
new clutch. brakes and exhaust system while the underside was
treated with Waxoyl. The interior underwent sympathetic
refurbishment with the seats being renovated. the sound proofing in
the doors replaced and the fitment of a new headlining. The
metallic blue paintwork. although showing a few blemishes. was
deemed to be too good and original to be resprayed and so retains
its factory finish. The Jaguar was treated to a new set of chrome
wire wheels and tyres at a cost of £3. 00 and which look
magnificent.

The car starts easily and settles down to a smooth idle. A blip of
the throttle produces that wonderful sound that is peculiar to the
Jaguar Mk. I and II saloons. We are informed that the car drives
very well and is comfortable in modern traffic as it has the
benefit of the original overdrive.

The Jaguar comes with an extensive history file which includes
original handbooks. service book. manufacturer's warranty and a
complete MoT history which shows the mileage to be genuine. There
is a current V5 Registration Certificate and an MoT Test
Certificate. valid until August 2016. Jaguar's iconic compact
saloon has a deservedly huge following and this delightful example
offers an inexpensive entry into classic Jaguar ownership.
