The Hudson Motor Car Company was founded by pioneers Howard
Coffin. George W. Dunham and Roy E. Chapin and largely funded by
department store owner Joseph L. Hudson. In 1910. just one year
after it was created. Hudson was the eleventh-largest car company
in America; a country then rife with makers. Having made its name
as 'The World's Largest Builder of Six-Cylinder Cars' by 1913. the
Hudson Motor Car Company held true to this boast for nearly two
decades. The 'Super Six' of 1916 was the tour de force; its
counterbalanced crankshaft was an industry breakthrough. By the
late 1920's however. the marketplace demanded straight eights. It
was the Packard Single Eight of 1924 that made the inline eight a
practical and popular engine and by 1929. eleven other
manufacturers had them.

On offer today is a unique example of the 1930 Hudson Super
Eight being the only righthand drive Super Eight model in the
country. This Hudson is built upon a 119" wheel base chassis and
was assembled and bodied in 1930 by Johnson and Smith. br/>coachbuilders of Christchurch. New Zealand. The chassis was
supplied from the United States to New Zealand where it was
assembled in righthand drive form. It was first registered there on
18th July 1931 and registered as a Super Eight. Later versions were
known as Great Eights and thereafter Greater Eights. The engine is
a straight eight 3830cc side valve unit with a three speed gearbox.
The handsome coachwork is in good order throughout and is finished
in dark blue with black wings. To the rear is a wooden
storage box covered in leather with an additional metal luggage
rack. Indicators were fitted in New Zealand to meet their vehicle
legislation. In 2007. the previous owner imported the Hudson into
the UK whereupon it was registered and all duties paid. He has also
informed the vendor that. ten years before the car was acquired by
him. a restoration was carried out in New Zealand and after
importing the car he only used the car for family outings and the
occasional wedding. The vendor purchased the Super Eight at the
beginning of 2013 and proceeded to prepare the car so he could take
it on rallies; to this end he has carried out a full service. br/>fitted five new tyres. replaced the dynamo and fitted new lights.
In the last two years it has travelled to Ireland twice to
participate in the Gordon Bennett Rally. in 2014 and 2015. the Kop
Hill Climb and also the Bicester Heritage Sunday brunch. This very
rare Hudson Super Eight comes supplied with a V5C registration
document and. although exempt. this Super Eight has a current MoT
test certificate.
