Porsche : 911 T Targa

On offer is an exceptional example of the last year of the chrome bumper. long hood 911 that has just come available. out of long term fastidious ownership.  This is an F Program 911 Targa which is one of about 925 manufactured for the 1973 model year (about the same number of 2. 4L 911S Targas were produced in MY 1972).   The ‘S' engine had Mechanical Fuel Injection. a 8. 5:1 compression ratio. and produced 190hp.

Options include the rare 110L plastic fuel tank (from the RS). Sports Seats. and Blaupunkt Frankfurt Radio.

This is a numbers matching. fully documented vehicle with one quality repaint (in 1983).   The car has only had two owners. the second. a Calgary eye doctor. for the last 40 years.

The maintenance on this car is virtually complete. and transcribed below. dating back to 1974 in Germany. where the car was originally delivered to the first owner. Horst Dieter Muller. who listed his address as Oasis de Nazaret – a resort town in Spain. After a top-end rebuild of the engine by Ludwig Gerstenmair-a Porsche dealer in Baden-Baden. in July 1974 at 22. 00km. he imported the car to Canada. The story relayed to the second owner was that Horst was not happy that his car would not reach 250km/hr on the Autobahn as promised. and he made the dealer take it back and rectify the problem-which was found to be a valvetrain issue.   He sold the car in 1976 in Alberta Canada with about 25. 00 km and the next 70. 00km were covered in summer weather in Canada.

In Calgary. the car was serviced by Select Auto. a dealer for Ferrari and Rolls Royce. and the engine and fuel injection system was rebuilt by them in August 1985 at approximately 75. 00km and at a cost of $10. 24.   The owner of Select Motors. John Chorney' s name is on all the invoices and telexes (!). and he is still around and currently finishing pre-war Rolls Royce Phantom 1 restoration. and is a patient of the 2nd owner.   Subsequent work on the car was performed by Riegel Tuning and Alpine Autowerks.   The car was treated to a quality repaint in its original colour of Metallic Green (230) by Cosmos Collision in 1983 ($2. 35).   Cosmos is currently the ‘Approved' bodyshop for Porsche Centre Calgary. and both Riegel and Alpine are still in business and located a few blocks away from Porsche Calgary.   I use all three business currently for my own classics.   The point being that the car is a fully documented well-known local car. worked on by the best people in the city.

The car has never been rusted. damaged or modified apart from the Jensen Stereo which was installed in the 80's. and has since been replaced with the original Blaupunkt.   The car still has the original body panels. floor pans with the original factory coatings.

The car is spectacular to drive.   I just can't say enough about it other than it imparts deep feelings of mechanical satisfaction and joy!  It starts up and idles beautifully. and revs cleanly throughout the rev range with no driveability issues.   This is a quick car with strong low end torque that gets quite fierce  over  4. 00rpm.   It has a gorgeous soundtrack. nimble chassis and talkative steering and has by far the best shifting 915 transmission (never rebuilt) I've ever sampled with virtually no sloppiness. and a very precise action.   Like I said it is an absolute joy.  

Condition wise the car is hard to fault.   It is a well-kept. original car that has been looked after and driven.   There are some minor stone chips. a couple very small scratches. and slight windscreen pits. The engine bay is tidy and clean. but not ‘detailed'.   I believe that there should be a chrome surround to the original radio which is not there.   The Fuchs alloys have some faded paint.   There are two service issues which we are addressing at present; one is the windshield washer motor needs to be replaced. and a cable to the heat exchangers looks to be broken. These will be fixed before sale.
