An impressive. large and imposing car. with original Cabriolet de Ville coachwork. which gives multiple configuration options. fully closed. part closed. fully open. etc. The design is nicely balanced. and looks good in any one of the available arrangements. particularly so with the roof down. which folds nice and low. The car is just out of storage. very sturdy structurally. running nicely. and will be very rewarding to attend to cosmetically. Ideally. the car should be used and enjoyed as it is. and after a lifetime in the USA. where it was delivered new. will be for the first time UK registered. enabling easy registration in any EEC country as well.

Although ordered in 1926 by William Rhinelander Stewart (1888/1945) 27TC spent some time in France & England prior to being shipped to New York in 1930. W. Rhinelander Stewart had good reason to be in Paris – the ease of obtaining of a divorce from his 1st wife Laura Biddle. They married in 1924 when Laura was just 18 years old – she was the great-granddaughter of A. J. Drexel (1826/93) banker whose junior partner in the firm of Drexel. Morgan & Co was non-other than John Pierpoint Morgan who alongside the Drew. Frick. Astor. Rockefeller. Carnegie & Vanderbilt families were collectively known as the Robber Barons. William R. Stewart can trace his lineage back to 1690 with P. J. Rhinelander – the Stewart was added with the marriage of Mary Rhinelander and Lispenard Stewart - the great-grandparents of William R. Stewart. In the late 18th century the Rhinelanders were the premier landowners in New York City. In 1936 William married the divorcee Janet Newbold Ryan (ex-wife of Allan Aloysius Ryan the grandson of Thomas Fortune Ryan a tobacco. insurance & transport magnate). Janet was known as ‘the most beautiful woman in New York'. In 1948 Janet married for the 3rd time to the James Bush – a member of the Bush political dynasty – by 1952 they had divorced. In 1909 William Rhinelander's sister Anita married into Portguese royalty and became known as Princess Miguel of Braganza. Duchess of Viseu. her Prince died in 1923 and in order to regain American citizenship she had to renounce her title but society always used her title! William & Anita's parents divorced in 1906 – their mother remarried 3 weeks later in Scotland to James Henry “Silent” Smith a financier. within 6 months he died leaving an estate of $25m shared between 2 nephews & his widow.
