Have you ever dreamed of owning an E-type Jag to use and enjoy the way people did back in the sixties?  Not something to just park up and polish but a sexy car to drive on those special days in those special ways.   If so. this could be the car for you.   It's a very nice usable car that drives absolutely beautifully and attracts admiring attention wherever it goes.   Sensible upgrades and careful maintenance make it a reliable and exciting car to drive. rather than one for the concours lawn.   After all. using a car as a car tends to lead to a bit of gentle wear and tear.   Let's call it patina.

This car was completed on February 26. 1962. less than one year after the E-type's grand unveiling in Geneva. and dispatched from the factory on March 13.   It's a genuine California car. being first registered in San Francisco on July 9.   The J62 serial number reflects a Californian regulation that required registration numbers to include the year of manufacture. and serves to confirm its west coast beginnings.

The story. as told to me. picks up again in the late 1990s when the car was imported into Canada by Alistair Black Special Services as a bit of a project.   Over the years the original silver grey paint had been replaced with black and the aluminium console panel covered over with padded vinyl in the fashion of the newer E-types of the day.   Before work could begin the car moved on to Ron Humphreys. who ultimately undertook the restoration.   This was Ron's third restoration and second on a Jaguar. the first being an XJS.   Ron did a very thorough job. stripping the car completely. mounting the body on a rotisserie and taking it back to bare metal.   He told me that the car was very solid with only one small rust hole. located under the driver's right heel.   Ron had the car painted in its present lovely but non-Jaguar emerald green metallic and installed a new biscuit coloured interior.   He also replaced the front brakes with Willwood 4 piston callipers c/w drilled rotors and installed polyurethane suspension bushes throughout.   I purchased the car in September 2006. showing 89. 55 miles on the speedo. and continued to upgrade and renew various aspects.

The Moss gearbox was one of the few things that was criticised about E-types back in the day.   This car answers that criticism with the JT5 Five Speed transmission and clutch that was installed in 2008.   This bespoke kit is based on the famed Borg Warner/Tremec T5 transmission and is made to fit precisely into the E-type. locating the shift lever exactly as originally.   It uses all new parts and is widely regarded as the best five speed adaptation for the E-type.   The new transmission drives through an original 3. 31 differential. standard on UK and European market cars but a rare option in North America.   This. in conjunction with the . 83 OD. results in stellar low and mid gear performance coupled with relaxed top gear cruising. running over 700 rpm lower than a standard 3. 54 equipped North American market E-type at 70 mph.  The original numbers matched gearbox (EB3386JS) and associated parts are included with the car.   The car retains its original numbers matched engine and head (R4245-9).

Another really useful upgrade is the Electronic Distributor-less Ignition System (EDIS) c/w MegaJolt Lite Jr  controller installed in 2013.    It gives precise digital control of the spark under wide ranging conditions and eliminates the old Lucas distributor and coil.   Timing is calibrated directly off the crankshaft. eliminating the vagaries of that gear driven distributor and its mechanical bob-weights.   This installation is a limited-run kit custom crafted in California by talented innovator and E-type enthusiast. Ray Livingston.

Other updates that I have done include a gear-reduction starter (2013). spin-on oil filter conversion (2008). fan switch upgrade (2008). and modern electric fan (2009). all supplied by CoolCat Express.   None of these upgrades is strictly necessary on an E-type. but in combination they add reliability. durability. and convenience. which tends to be confidence inspiring and make the car more usable.   Another durability item is the Double ‘S' Exhausts stainless steel exhaust system new from the header back in 2012.   An invisible electronic upgrade (2011) on the original Smiths clock by Jaguar Clocks makes it a reliable and accurate timepiece.  When the steering rack was replaced in 2010 the mounts were upgraded to the polyurethane type that. along with the poly suspension bushes. add to the sharp supple feel of the E-type Jag.

Included with the car is a complete Jag Mk II toolbox in very nice condition.   An incomplete one of these showed up on eBay recently listed at $960 US.   Also included is a nearly unused Wolf car cover.

On May 26 of this year the car was appraised by Oceanside Auto Appraisers here in British Columbia at $112. 00 CDN. or about $90. 00 US.   Here's a link to that appraisal that you can copy and paste into your browser - https://dl. dropboxusercontent. com/u/16593956/20150523Morris62EtypeFHCFinal. pdf
