A fine example of the stylish Hooper ‘Empress' design. benefiting from a great deal of attention some years ago. We last owned the car in 1998. at which time we carried out an extensive engine overhaul. as well as considerable attention to suspension. steering. brakes. etc. etc. More recently. the car has been fully repainted. and is now looking very smart. As you might expect. it is running and driving very nicely. and ready for its new owner to use and enjoy. Offered serviced. prepared and newly MoT tested.

Chassis No. B42YD. Reg No. PYP 270. £32. 00.

Snippets: Liquor & Library

Ordered by Mjr John R. Abbey (1894/1969) whose grandfather Henry Abbey was a partner of W. Hallett in Kemp Town Brewery. after Hallett's death the Abbey family took over the brewery until it was acquired by Charringtons in 1954 – the same year that B42YD was purchased! (In 1935 Mjr Abbey's father purchased a Phantom II Chassis Nr 48UK). Mjr Abbey served in WWI & WWII with the Rifle Brigade – his younger brother Noel was killed in 1918 (aged 20) whilst serving with the Grenadier Guards. Mjr Abbey was a book collector who specialised in illuminated manuscripts & fine bindings dating from the 11th Century. In 1964 B42YD was acquired by David Keswick a scion of the Keswick-Jardine-Matheson family. The business can be traced back to the 18th Century when they started trading in the Far East – initially as opium traders! The family later diversified into banking. shipping. railways. textiles. politics & property - various family members becoming Tai-pans (foreign-born businessmen who headed large Hong-Kong Trading houses – the family are said to have inspired James Clavell to write his novels).
