Manufactured in five generations. the Le Mans was initially
introduced as the top-of-the-line version of the compact-sized
Pontiac Tempest toward the end of the 1961 model year. For the 1962
model year. the Le Mans was still just a trim package on the
Tempest but in 1963. it became a model in its own right. It
reverted back for 1964 but in 1965. using a larger floor plan it. br/>once again. it became its own model. For 1966. all Pontiac
intermediates got new styling featuring 'tunnelback' rooflines on
two-door hardtop and pillared coupés. In 1971. the Tempest
nameplate was retired and Pontiac promoted the Le Mans nameplate to
full-series status to identify all of its intermediate models. For
1972. all Pontiac intermediates were now Le Mans models and the
low-priced T-37 line was replaced by a base Le Mans pillared coupé.
The top-line intermediate was the Luxury Le Mans available in
hardtop sedan and coupé models and featuring plusher interiors than
regular Le Mans models.

Originally imported from the USA in 1980. this example lived in
Penzance for most of it formative years before being sold. br/>approximately two years ago. to the current owner. It has had an
extensive programme of restoration and upgrading whilst in the West
Country. then later. by the current owner. a complete engine
rebuild with new pistons. gas-flowed headers. high-lift cams
and a performance Edlebrock manifold and four-barrel carburettor
(photographic documentation included). The transmission has also
been rebuilt including a new torque-converter. The brakes have been
converted to discs at the front and the all locks now operate from
one key. There are new seals and rubbers throughout with all bills
amply reflected in the extensive history file accompanying the car.
Reported by the vendor to be extremely reliable. this classic
American muscle-car is well presented with the sum of its parts far
exceeding the estimate.
