Based upon the two-seater Elan which had been launched by Lotus
in 1962. a classic GT style 2+2 model was developed using a
stretched chassis and widened track to accommodate two small rear
seats. Improvements to the interior and the addition of front fog
lights in 1969 characterised the new Elan +2 S in 1969 but it
wasn't until the much-awaited big valve head engines arrived early
in 1971 that the Elan +2 really came of age thanks to the new
126bhp output. Known as the Elan Sprint. the same engine was
transplanted into the +2S to create the Elan +2 S 130. which also
featured a silver metalflake roof to distinguish it from
lesser models This version was capable of 125mph and 0-60 in
just 7. 4 seconds. It wasn't just the rapid performance that boosted
Lotus's image but the fact that this model was the first that Lotus
chose not to supply in kit form - thus controlling manufacturing
quality.
This example in metallic gunmetal grey with the silver starflake
roof is a '+2 S 130 Big Valve' model and comes directly to us from
a small private collection of European sportscars in Cheshire. The
car has an impressively documented history which verifies the low
mileage at 58. 71 miles and benefits from stainless steel manifolds
and exhaust system plus a galvanised replacement chassis. Recent
bills in the file show work undertaken to rebuild the cylinder head
using hardened valve seats to run on unleaded fuel. new water pump
plus timing chain tensioner and driveshaft conversion all conducted
within the last 2. 00 miles with bills beyond £6. 00 from Club
Lotus Heritage approved Specialists 'UK Sports Cars' in
Canterbury.
The car has been hardly used since its MoT test in May when it
passed with no advisories. The Elan is described as fun and
engaging to drive with very capable performance and excellent road
feel. The paintwork dates from many years ago and illustrates well
the integrity of this glassfibre bodyshell with a handsome deep
lustre and minimal evidence of structural flex across the years.
Overall a very well documented and cared for example of the most
desirable of Lotus's Elan +2's. ready to enjoy and show.
