The '71 Eldorado is the best designed of all the classic luxury American cars of the 1970s.

This example is coded in the rare. highly desirable colour combo of (upgrade option colour). metallic. Firemist Chalice Gold with cream maize interior.

Nothing to spend. This car has no issues. Everything works as it did from day one. Just step in. touch the pedal and cruise in style and luxury.

Some background info:

The Eldorado. for 1971 was a completely new look. both inside and out. It had a more massive overview. so you knew instantly that ‘this is an Eldorado'.

While styling was new and completely different to the previous year. the 1971 Eldorado retained an elegant profile. with its long hood. short deck. and low. sling silhouette. For 1971 a new convertible model was added to the line making the Eldorado the only personal luxury car in America with a convertible offering. It was the first year an Eldorado convertible as available since 1966.

The bigger V-8 of 1970 hinted that a bigger Eldo was on the way. But though the mostly new 1971 edition was 6. 3 inches longer between wheel centres. it was just 0. 6-inch longer overall and only some 75 pounds heavier.

It was precisely what the luxury market wanted for most of the self-indulgent Seventies. Sales bear this out. Bolstered by a revived Eldorado convertible (replacing the de Ville ragtop). this series recorded sizeable production gains through 1973.

But back to the 1971 Eldorado which kept its basic shape for eight years. The second generation front-wheel-drive Eldorado was offered as a sedan and a convertible. Although it had the huge 500 cubic inch engine. the compression was lowered so that it had 35 less horsepower. Remember this is still gross horsepower. The change to net horsepower does not take effect until the 1973 models. As a rule of thumb (but by no means accurate) net horsepower is about 2/3 gross horsepower. Rear coil springs were another new technical feature. The Eldorado wheelbase was stretched more than six inches. too. Body styling was heavily sculptured. A vertically textured. rectangular grille was new. Front fenders had a chiselled. cut-off look and a vertical windsplit. that harkened back to the early 1950s. appeared just behind the doors. Fender skirts were something new for Eldorado and added to the old-fashioned. classical image. So did the revival of convertible styling in this line. Trim features included twin vertical front bumper guards; Fleetwood wreaths on the hood and deck; Eldorado scripts on the lower front fenders; short horizontal belt line mouldings on front fenders and doors; rocker sill beauty panels and a stand- up hood ornament. Narrow "coach" windows were cut into the rear roof pillar of the coupe. Rear end treatment for the new body included a raised and extended trunk lid appearance; extra large backlight; and a massive rear bumper with a flat in-and-out look. that housed vertical. wraparound taillights at each side. Standard fare for the sporty luxury series included all DeVille equipment. less rear arm rests. plus Automatic Level Control and front-wheel-drive technology.

The 1971 Eldorado convertible today is a rare and highly desirable luxury classic car. Only 6. 00 were produced due to a UAW strike in 1971. Good examples in the optional (extra cost) Firemist colours are a premium find.

I've owned classic Cadillacs from the 'golden era' of early 1950s - mid 1970s for over 25 years. have been a member of the Australian and US Cadillac clubs (Cadillac La Salle Club). been to dozens of classic car shows. with my cars winning awards. travelled to the USA many times to car shows and auctions and I can confidently say this is one of the best value Cadillacs you could find. As an experienced buyer. restorer and owner. I'm a careful buyer. Everything works as it should. no money to spend. Inexperienced classic car buyers consider only the 'purchase price' when buying a classic car. without thought to what needs to be spent after purchase. This is a buy-and-drive car.

Exterior:

The Chalice Gold Firemist paint is in excellent condition. The finish is a dazzling glass-like gloss with a deep polish. The body has no dents or dings. It is rust free and laser straight. There are no major scrapes. scratches or blemishes in the paint (except one minor scratch on the front driver guard which has been brush touched correctly in the matching body paint. not noticable unless on close inspection). The chrome is mostly in excellent condition. with some light clouding on the lower part of the rear bumper which is not noticeable from a few metres away.

The power top works perfectly. The top is in excellent. like -new condition and is the original colour (black) and style with no rips. tears or holes. It still has the original style correct  glass. not replaced with the cheaper plastic window. There is no evidence rust has ever been in the car. The correct white wall (and thin gold accent stripe) tyres are almost new with no wear.

The car looks as good in person as it does in the photos. There will be no disappointments for the new owner.

Interior:

The interior in this Cadillac looks very fresh and is in beautiful condition.  The seats have been recovered and are superb with no splits or cracks in the vinyl and look almost brand new.   The carpet is in like new condition as well with no stains. holes. rips. or signs of wear.   The door panels are in very nice shape with no cracks and unlike many cars of this age. they fit very well and tight to the door.   The arm rest pads are not cracked up either.   The dash is not split or sun faded at all.   The power seat works correctly in all directions. The trunk looks very tidy and is complete with the spare tire and jack.   The original radio works great and gets very good reception.   This car has not been smoked in.   There is no ash in the ashtray. no burn marks anywhere. or aroma whatsoever.

The interior also includes two NOS (New Old Stock) 1971 Eldorado rubber floor mats. These mats are not being reproduced. but are in fact left over as-new stock that came from a dealer with the mats still in their original box.

This interior looks just as good in person as it does in the photos.

Mechanical:

This car is in great mechanical condition.   There are no issues at all with the drivability of this Cadillac.   Even the a/c works and blows cold.   The car starts right away every time and runs well.   There is no smoke when starting or driving the car.   The car drives terrifically with no strange noises or vibrations.   The car is smooth on the road and highway.   The transmission shifts well throughout the power band.   The brakes are responsive and do not pull to one side or the other.  Also. the engine compartment is beautifully clean and detailed as one can see in the photos.   All of the interior and exterior lights work (including the trunk light. glove box lights. and license plate light). the horn works. the remote trunk release works. and all of the power windows work.   Even the clock works. which is very rare on most classic cars of this era. The combination of power from the 500ci Cadillac V8 and the silky smooth ride make this Cadillac and absolute pleasure to drive. especially with top down on a sunny day.

Overall Condition

This Cadillac is in magnificent driver condition.   It gets A TON of attention going down the road.   The pictures reflect the quality and condition of the car and how it really looks in person.

Flaws: As mentioned above. there are two just minor cosmetic flaws on the car: (1) on the front driver (left) side front fender corner near the headlight there is a brush touch of about 3cm where there appears to be a minor scrape. The body is not damaged. This is only noticeable on very close inspection. The paint match appears to be from the original re-paint so the paint match is excellent. (2) The rear right (passenger side) bumper bar is lightly cloudy and may at some stage require re-chroming to make it perfect mirror like. As you can see from the photos below these small flaws are not evidently noticable. but do need to be mentioned. These are the only two areas that prevent me from describing this car as ‘perfect' condition with a higher asking price.

Convertible Cadillacs are highly collectible and make excellent and practical cars to use and drive.   Convertible classic cars. especially the front wheel drive Eldorados have quickly appreciated over the past several years and make excellent investments.   One could enjoy this vehicle for several years and sell it for more than your purchase price.

If you are serious about a Cadillac convertible. you will be pleased to view  the car in person. if possible.   There is nothing to hide with this mangificent classic.   If there is anything unclear or if you have any questions or concerns please contact me or call.
