Snippets: The Wealthy Daughter
Delivered to Mrs. Sarah Elizabeth Rainer (nee Plant). an elderly widow. Born in 1869 she had married Leonard William T Rainer (born 1871) in 1898 but sadly he died the following year aged just 27. Sarah never remarried and independent research shows that after Leonard's death she returned to live with her parents. In the 1911 census her father - John Plant (widower) is described as a “Property Owner” & upon his death in 1913 he left the sum of £22. 22. 1s (£2million in today's money) to his children which explains how a widow aged 60 could afford to purchase a very nice house “The Mill House” in Market Deeping & a brand new Rolls-Royce! Quite how her father became a man of means is unclear as earlier census records simply show that he was a railway worker – another mystery to solve. By 1931 GXO4 was with Anthony H. Bisby whose company manufactured cutlery including the unusually titled “5-o'clocks” & “Fish Eaters”. During WWII they supplied the Pilots with survival machetes in case they had to make emergency landings in the jungle! In 1947 A H Bisby & Co Ltd exhibited their wares at the British Industries Fair. The manufacturing processes that they used included Chromium. electro-plated. stainless nickel & silver plated.
