1974 Pontiac Trans Am

455 cid 4bbl

The Pontiac Trans Am provides a great memory for every auto aficionado over 40.   About 40 years ago. just about every high school kid interested in cars wanted a Pontiac Trans Am with that big screaming chicken plastered on the hood.   If you are reading this listing and you are old enough the remember “Smoky and the Bandit” you know what I am talking about! Pontiac could not build these cars fast enough.   I was working at a Pontiac/Datsun dealership at the time and remember my excitement when the new-car hauler pulled up in front of the dealership with a load of Trans Ams.   My wallet was about to bulge with the commissions and the City Hall coffers were soon to be filled with income from speeding tickets revenue.

Although Pontiac had enjoyed success in the 60's with NASCAR and the NHRA. their finest hour came with the introduction of the Trans Am.   Along with the development a new powerful 455 cubic-inch engine. the engineers focused on handling of this iconic machine.   A small engineering team led by Herb Adams fashioned functional ground effects and a heavy duty suspension to make the Trans Am the perfect driving machine of it's time.

The man responsible for the Firebird is John Z. DeLorean.   Joined with Pontiac engineer Herb Adams and advanced design engineer William T. Collins a special kind of Firebird was born Trans Am.   Pontiac agreed to pay the Sports Car Club of America $5 per car for the use of the name “Trans Am. ”  Ultimately. Pontiac paid the SCCA $1. 29 million just to use the name.   The name Trans Am has grown to a notoriety that few monikers will ever achieved. When we hear the name Trans Am we think speed.   We think power.   We think sexy. Yes. we think screaming chicken!!!

In this 1974. the legendary 455 cid engine was paired with the M40 Turbo Hydramatic transmission to provide an exceptional driving experience.   Slip into the bucket seat. with that unmistakable engine-turned dash sitting in front of you sporting round gauges.   The seating position is low. but very comfortable.   Look out over the hood. and there is the reverse-mounted scoop that reads “455-HO. ”  Grab the black leather-wrapped Hurst shifter that angles near your right hand.   Turn the key. slam the throttle all the way. and hold on.

This 1974 Pontiac Trans Am has been in the possession of the same owners for many years.   It was babied throughout its ownership and as you can tell from the vanity plates it was a prized family possession. They carefully maintained the car and kept it in excellent working condition.   The interior is in excellent shape.   The paint is beautiful.   The car runs and drives as it was designed 40 years ago.   It is an original. numbers matching example of a great piece of history.

I am frequently asked about the next good investment in the classic car market. One of the cars on that short list answer always includes the Trans Am.   This car is the perfect combination of driving enjoyment. head turning thrills and solid investment.   Collector Car Market review estimates a #2 1974 Pontiac Trans Am with this equipment at $38. 00.
