A 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo Sunroof Coupe. now for auction on eBay!

Faster than a Speeding Bullet: 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo 3. 3 Sunroof Coupe!

One of the undisputed supercars of the baby boomer generation was the Porsche 911 Turbo. First introduced in 1975. it was nothing short of sensational. a trailblazing high performance car capable of giving a contemporary Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer or Lamborghini Countach a run for the money. More curvaceous than Jayne Mansfield. it was pure auto porn. prominently displayed on posters in young men's rooms around the globe.

Driving on the fast lane of the Autobahn. a flared and winged. black Turbo approaching in the rear view mirror had the same effect as seeing Darth Vader menacingly raising his light saber in attack mode.
Panic!

Aside from mechanical upgrades. such as increasing the engine capacity from 3. 0 to 3. 3 liters in 1978. the Turbo's appearance didn't change much until production ended in 1989. It was and still is a 1970s supercar. capable of 0-to-60 sprints in less than 4. 6 seconds.

The 1986 Porsche 911 Turbo presented here. VIN *WP0JB0936GS050704*. is a well-kept. numbers matching. three-owner example. Sold new on April 1st. 1986 in Buffalo. NY. the car spent most of its life in South Carolina. being driven less than 4. 00 miles annually. on average. until eventually finding its way to California. A clean history report. many stamps in the warranty & maintenance booklet. plus numerous repair receipts provide a clear provenance.

The factory books with their merlot-colored vinyl pouch. BLAUPUNKT radio manuals. as well as a binder containing chronologically filed receipts totalling $7. 44. 7 accompany the Turbo.
Let's now inspect this amazing Porsche in more detail. starting up front. with the trunk.

Dressed in fabulously preserved black velour carpeting. the trunk contains the complete Porsche tool roll with factory tools. the factory compressor to inflate the spare. and even the factory BLAUPUNKT SQR 23 radio. which the previous owner substituted for one with a CD player.

Below the trunk mat. we discover all the factory-original finishes. Factory paint label "Schwarz" (code 700) is still attached to the right inner fender. Unique to the Turbo is a weight-saving. cast aluminum spare whereas the more pedestrian models had to do with a steel wheel.
Note working trunk light and hood struts which. along with the presence of all the factory-supplied extras. are always a good indicator regarding the level of care a Porsche has received.

Battery is near new and -- unlike many others -- our 911 shows no corrosion in this area. Since the torsion bars are mounted to the front pan. its condition is of paramount importance for safety.

The Turbo's pristinely preserved undercarriage is of reference quality. There is no corrosion present now. nor has there ever been any previous rust. and neither has this car been in any kind of accident. ever. and that's guaranteed! Remnants of the factory-applied Cosmoline protective wax can still be found here and there.

The big 7 & 9 inch FUCHS alloys still wear their anodized factory finish. with painted centers. Check out the huge. Porsche 917 race car-derived brakes lurking behind the wheel!
After the undercarriage shots were taken. we ordered and installed a brand new. $850. 00 set of Bridgestone Potenza RE-11 extreme-performance radials of the correct size 205/55-16 and 245/45-16. respectively.

Collectors rejoice: apart from the lower front valance. this car wears 100% of its factory-original paint. applied in Zuffenhausen. in January of 1986. We can state this as a fact. since we've measured every single panel with our German high-tech electronic paint thickness gauge.
Apart from the usual rock cips on the front valance and the leading edge of the front bumper. there are no dings. dents. scratches. or other issues that could cause a Porsche aficionado sleepless nights. After almost 29 years. the factory finish is still smooth and glossy.

Spacious enough for a large or tall pilot and his long legged flight attendant. the Porsche 911 cockpit presents itself sensationally clean. Car is fully optioned with ice cold air conditioning. power seats. mirrors. windows. and even cruise control. Everything works perfectly. as it should.

The Turbo also comes with a power sunroof ("electric sunroof" in Porsche lingo). which -- again -- works perfectly. Factory black headliner and sunvisors are original and -- you've guessed it -- both vanity lights work as they should.

The traditional 911 dash. You can't improve upon perfection!
We're pleased to report that the vulnerable dash top has remained crack. split. and warp free.

Turbo features five large. circular instruments. with white-on-black dials and bright orange pointers. a timeless design. They all look like new and work like new. Check out the boost gauge inside the tach.

Rear fold-down seats look like they have never been used. They provide plenty of extra space for luggage. the seven dwarves. or a four-legged family member.

Engine compartment looks toothbrush clean. Partially hidden by the huge intercooler. Turbo's 3. 3-Liter Boxer puts out 330 healthy Teutonic horses. allowing the car to sprint from 0-to-60 in only 4. 6 seconds -- which is quick enough to cause temporary ocular disability -- and keep on accelerating until a V-max of 172mph has been reached. If you have never been strapped into the seat of a violently accelerating 930. just imagine being catapulted off an aircraft carrier to get an idea of what it's like.

The engine is as healthy as the proverbial ox. doesn't leak. doesn't smoke. doesn't burn oil. and doesn't make any untoward noises.

We've just spent $1. 09. 83 with local Porsche-guru Jason @ RS Enterprises for a PPI. valve adjustment and to address a few minor issues. and the car passed muster with flying colors!

From below. the plumbing for the single turbocharger is visible. A complete. $5. 00. 00 Billy Boat stainless header/heat exchanger/exhaust system has been fitted. adding 44hp and all but eliminating turbo lag. Yee-haw!
The "other" exhaust is the exit for the wastegate which allows excess pressure to escape if need be. It's responsible for the characteristic spitting and bellowing a Turbo Porsche makes when you get off the loud pedal at high rpm.

Still beautiful here in November. with blue skies and temperatures in the mid-70s. we took the 930 Turbo out for a test drive. all the while shooting these photos.

This particular Porsche has a rock solid feel to it. provides excellent visibility. and a tremendous. omnipresent feeling of build quality. It handles like it's on rails. and in order to lose traction in a turn. you'll have to be deep into triple-digit speeds (or commit the cardinal sin of rear-engined motoring: take your foot off the accelerator).

The turbocharged flat six has a unique soundtrack. ranging from a bassy. phasing hum at idle. to morphing into a barrage of cannon-fire exhaust as you work your way up through the rpm range.

Once boost is built. you better hold on tight as your noggin will be pressed hard into the headrest and you may forget to breathe. fighting minor cardiovascular discomfort along the way. We've managed to get from zero to 110mph by the time we reached the end of a very short freeway on-ramp. and boy howdy. were our hearts pounding!

We were sad to put the Turbo back into the showroom after our test drive. It's one of the most impressive cars we've ever had the pleasure to drive. and -- short of all-out race cars -- the fastest.
