For Bentley and Rolls-Royce. the star of the 1959 London Motor
Show was their first all alloy V8 engine found in both the Bentley
S2 and its cousin. the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II. The engine
produced approximately 200bhp (Bentley and Rolls-Royce would never
quote horsepower figures. preferring to state that it was
'adequate') and by virtue of its alloy construction. it weighed the
same as the 4. 8-litre. six-cylinder engine it replaced resulting in
a smoother. more powerful ride. Bentley also offered the S2 in the
elegant 'Continental'; the highest specification of the chassis and
although quite similar to the standard S2. it featured upgraded
brakes and a higher rear axle ratio to handle the more demanding
requirements for high speed cruising on the European continent with
its more modern motorways. Continentals were consistently faster. br/>quieter and more comfortable than standard production cars. Most
Bentley S2's carried factory 'standard steel saloon' coachwork
which satisfied the company's commercial requirements but for those
preferring something more exclusive. Bentley and Rolls-Royce were
still offering bespoke coachwork which was executed mostly on the
Bentley Continental chassis by the Rolls-Royce owned coach building
companies H. J. Mulliner & Co. and Park Ward & Co.

This very original 1962 Bentley Continental Flying Spur by H. J.
Mulliner was supplied by Messrs. Rippon Brothers (Sheffield) and
has had only two owners from new; the vendor purchased the car
April 1972 from the company owned by the first owner. Mr Frank
Hearnshaw. when the car had covered about 55. 00 miles. This Flying
Spur has been fully maintained throughout and has been serviced and
repaired as necessary to its current and warranted mileage of
107. 25 miles. in fact the car has only been driven 10. 00 miles
since 1987. Finished in Caribbean Blue with off white Connolly hide
piped in blue carpets. this Continental still has all its original
hand tools. torch. wheel changing tools and the hand book is
complete with its wiring diagram and lubricating chart. It is
supplied with a V5C registration document. an MoT test certificate. br/>with no advisories. which expires on 22nd August 2015. the original
'Buff' log book first stamped 13th April 1962 and a large history
file full of invoices from when the current owner purchased the
car. the workshop orders between August 1968 to July 1971 and a
letter dated April 1972 which gives the service history on record
with Rippon Brothers between 1963 and 1967. This is a car of
elegance and style that is still more than able to cruise at speed
to the more exclusive events and resorts around the World.
