Snippets – D'Aunay to Dawnay to Downe & their Houses:
Richard. the 10th Viscount Downe (descended from Sir Payan D'Aunay of Normandy) can count 4 magnificent properties amongst the family homes – Danby Castle built in the 14th Century by the Latimers - between 1534/43 Danby was home to the widow Lady Catherine Latimer – (nee Parr) who after the death of her 2nd husband married King Henry VIII. Danby was purchased by the Dawnays in 1656 and remains with the family today. Cowick Hall of York - dates from the late 1600s - is regarded as the 1st Renaissance “Italian” house of the North of England. The Downe family remained at Cowick Hall for over 400 years until in 1889 the 9th Viscount sold the estate to the industrialist S. J. Cooper. The magnificent property of Beningbrough Hall was built C1716 by John Bourchier III (replacing the earlier house built by Sir Ralph Bourchier). Both the Bourchier & Downe families can claim Royal blood flowing in their veins from both the male & female lines via the Tudors & the Plantagenets. In 1827 the last direct heir to the Bourchier estate died & Beningbrough Hall was inherited by a cousin – Rev. William Henry Dawnay. the 6th Viscount Downe. The fourth home of interest is Wykeham Abbey in which the 10th Viscount housed his extensive collection of some 131 Rembrandt etchings which included – “Head of a Man in a Fur Cap”; “Christ returning from the Temple with His Parents” & “The Star of the Kings”. In 1928 the 10th Viscount married an American heiress Margaret Christine Bahnsen – daughter of Christian Bahnsen who owned the Gera & New Jersey Worsted Mills. the family having emigrated from Germany in the early 1900s. The 10th Viscount's brother-in-law was Rudolph Zinsser whose grandfather had founded the American firm of William Zinsser Paints.
