Owned in the 60s 70s and 80s by John Oldham. author of ‘Ghosts. Phantoms and Spectres'. and prior to that in long-term ownership from the 1930s. The car is an exceptional example. in excellent condition throughout. with a full toolkit. and a mileage of 106. 00. which is almost certainly genuine. The car has a well-documented history. and comes with a large file of literature. including some fascinating paperwork. A rare opportunity to obtain an attractive. well-proportioned. well-appointed PIII limousine in truly lovely condition. not to be confused with an average example.

Chassis No. 3AZ146. Reg No. CLJ 600. £65. 00.

Snippets: A Ladies Phantom:

Between 1936 & 1963 3AZ146 was very much a lady's car. First with Miss Harriet Richardson Maconochie – her family manufactured preserved provisions such as the “Pan Yan” Pickle. The pickle was last made in 2002 by Branston Pickle but due to a fire in the factory the secret recipe has been lost forever! Miss Maconochie was 75 years young when she bought 3AZ146 & died in January 1939 after only owning the car for 2 years. Harriet was an enthusiastic motorist having previously owned two Phantom IIs - 72YC & 52JS. The second name on the chassis cards (April 1939) is that of Dr. Dora Kate Smee. an academic geographer & long-time companion of Mrs. Matilda Constance Ismay. Dora's parents emmigrated to New Zealand before WWI leaving her in England to complete her education. shortly after qualifying as a teacher Dora took a holiday job as companion to Matilda Ismay & the Ismay's have Dora financial support whilst she was completing her degree. Six years earlier (Dec 1933) Dora & Matilda together with Wrighton (chauffeur) & Edna (maid) left Haselbech Hall on a journey of a lifetime in their Phantom II (74GN) travelling from Northampton. through Europe to Timbuktu via the settlements of Mascara. Reggane. Tabankor & Constantine. a journey of some 7. 00 miles. After a month Dora Smee transferred 3AZ146 to her companion Mrs Matilda Ismay (nee Schieffelin – prominent American merchants. landowners. attorneys. shippers. financiers. politicians) the widow of Charles Bower Ismay (of the White Star Shipping Line). Matilda's elder sister Florence was married to Charles's younger brother Joseph Bruce Ismay so the sisters were also sister-in-laws & the brothers brother-in-laws! Charles Ismay died in 1924 of a sleeping sickness & Matilda was left to run the estate. she never remarried & remained at Haselbech. which was used by the military during WWII with Matilda & Dora moving out to the Lodge. The 3rd name on the chassis card (May 1939) is that of Matilda Ismay. upon her death Matilda (1963) bequeathed 3AZ146 to Kenneth Hunnisett who had been employed by her for over 38 years.
