OVERVIEW:

The Liberty truck was born of the US Army requirement for a rugged. reliable. and easily maintained truck fleet to support its entry into WWI. It was a standardized US Army specification and design for a large cargo hauler. It was often referred to as a USA from the lettering on the radiator tank.

It brought together the best designs and reliability of components from within the American truck building industry. The truck was built by fifteen different truck makers. including Selden. Gramm-Bernstein. Garford. Pierce-Arrow. Republic. Bethlehem. Diamond T. Brockway. and Sterling.

The engine was a massive 424 ci. 4-cylinder with a Continental built block. Waukesha heads and crankcase. and Hercules pistons. It is rated at 52 hp. The 4-speed transmission and full floating worm drive rear axle were also joint efforts by the leading firms in their fields. A total of 9452 Liberty trucks were built with production ceasing with the end of the war.

This is a very rare and unrestored original 4x2 Class B 3-tonner in running condition. It carries serial number tag on the engine which identifies it as number B-1575.
Specifications are a wheelbase 160. 5”. total length 261”. width 84”. and height 75”.

DRIVETRAIN:

This Liberty truck retains its original Continental 4 cylinder engine along with all other related components.

The 4-speed standard transmission and the differential are also the original units. It featured low gear reduction. a very low first gear. and locking differential.

CHASSIS:

The frame is solid and straight. with original green paint still evident in many areas. It and all chassis components are solid and original. There is a weld repair mid-way down the left frame rail.
A spare rear tire on rim in included. shown in pic in photo album. The pallet on the chassis with 2 large drill bits is not included as it is not part of the truck.

BODY:

Period photos show that these trucks were very often equipped with a soft top over the cab area. and a stake sided bed with a canvas canopy.
The cowl and hood are in fairly solid and straight condition. The fenders are less so showing some tears in the metal and some dent damage. more so on the left fender.
One hood latch is missing.
A correct original grille rad guard is included. it just hasn't been put back on. Same as shown in historical photo.

SUMMARY:

If you are a historical WWI enthusiast. or a fan of early transportation and hauling. then this is your opportunity to acquire a rare original example.

The few surviving examples are in museums in the USA and UK. or in private collections. as this one is. Rarely do they surface or come available. especially in original unrestored. and fairly complete condition.

Now that he is winding down his restoration activities and has no further plans for this USA. the owner has decided to make this historical war workhorse available.
