1948 Cadillac 62 Convertible

 

The 1948-49 Cadillac Series Sixty-Two Convertible and Sedanet were one of the most beautiful and elegant Cadillacs ever produced. Part of the first postwar redesign. they were among the most graceful cars of the era.

First created by Frank Hershey. the tail fins were originally disliked and scorned by GM design giant Harley Earl.  Hershey persisted and (despite Earl's dislike for the rear fender design) won GM executive approval. The first fins rolled out of the Detroit plant. in the early months of 1948. Because he was the head of the GM design studio. Earl unjustly received credit for designing the "tail fin" that adorned American automobiles for the next two decades. The tail fin was used on Cadillacs up to 1964.

The '48 Cadillac was an instant success with buyers. When dealers first saw it. however. they were apprehensive. and some were downright scared the public wouldn't like it. But any negative opinions the dealers had were soon overshadowed by the public's instant and massive demand for the car. The '48 was the spirit of the P-38 Lightning on wheels -- and it was there to be bought in any Cadillac showroom. With that beautiful line flowing through the body panels. climaxing in the elegant tailfins that gave the effect of making the car look longer. the sheer beauty and simplicity of the car's body took many an onlooker's breath away. The rounded bumpers and curved windshield only added to the car's sleek styling. In 1948. Cadillac was the luxury car to own.  

 

Up for auction is very rare. and extremely beautiful and elegant 1948 Cadillac 62 Convertible in need of completing the restoration. In 1948 there were only 5. 50 Convertibles built and this beauty is one of them.

This car was taken apart for a full restoration 25+ years ago. It started out as a really solid and original car. Paint was stripped down. interior. glass and all trim removed. and car was getting prepped for paint. Then the whole project came to a halt. As the time passed. car was sitting in the storage. and its owner moved couple of times. moving the car with him. and during that process some of its parts were lost. Car is about 90%-95% complete now. Some of its parts. including the glass (not a big deal as brand new set including the Windshield is about $850 on eBay!). radiator. carburetor. nbsp;and some other things were lost during the moving process. but again majority of its parts stayed together with the car. What you see on the pictures is what is all included.

Car was always stored inside and it is extremely solid. Frame. undercarriage. and all structural areas are extremely nice and solid. Except for some minor surface rust. and small rust areas on the bottoms of the rear fenders. this car is restorers dream! Dry. very solid car. with extremely good  and straight bones. and great return on the investment!!!! It also rolls and steers without any issues.

What makes 1948 Convertible special among collectors. beside its low production numbers. is  that 1948 Cadillac's instrument panel was a one-year-only feature due to its complexity (and therefore expense). often reffered to as the “rainbow” instrument panel due to its generous sweep. 1949 and later models were equipped with more simple and generic instrument panel.  Also. 1948 was the last year of the proven 346 Cubic Inch Flat Head V8.

According to its Original Data Plate. this beautiful drop-top Caddy came originally as Madeira Maroon Metallic (Paint Code 9). as witnessed by the original paint remains throughout its body and interior. Interior was Tan Bedford Cord & Red Leather (Code 56B). Carpet was removed when restoration started. but original red leather is still present on its original seats. Original Soft Top was Tan with Tan Binding (Code 1). This Cadillac also comes with optional Hydraulic Powered Windows. and all original window regulators are included with the car.

Today. this legendary American Luxury Convertible is 66 years old. and even after all those years. it still has that beautiful and timeless charm. and with its grace and beauty this legendary Caddy will be stopping the local traffic and turning heads for years and decades to come!! For a human being. 60 years is a good amount of time. but to an automobile it's an eternity! The ravages of time aren't just from nature. Tastes change. trends die. and once-envied designs have a way of looking absurd. Once in a while though. an automobile endures despite all this. and ultimately. becomes a classic.   This Cadillac is that vehicle!!!

Flat Head V8 Engine and optional Hydra-Matic Automatic transmission were put back into the car and now restoration needs to be completed. All instruments are present and complete down to its original Clock!

With its Rare and highly desirable color combination of Madeira Maroon Exterior. and Red Leather Interior. it really doesen't get any better than this if you want Unmolested. solid. highly desirable 1948 Cadillac Convertible. that you want to restore to your standards. and have a highly appreciating toy whose value will only go up with time as these cars are getting harder and harder to come by!!!

$500 Non-Refundable Deposit via PayPal is due within 24 hours after the end of the auction. and winning bidder MUST contact us within this period to arrange payment and shipping details.

The balance (cash in person. money order. bank loan or certified check. wire transfer) is due within 3 days after the end of the auction!! All financial transactions must be completed before vehicle delivery.

Fees:

We do charge $185 documentary fee that will be added to the winning bid amount. This fee is used to cover any administrative and paperwork expenses. overnighting the documents to your door. and issuing a 30 days temporary tag.

 All buyers are responsible for all state. county. city taxes and fees. as well as title/registration fees in the state that the vehicle will be registered in.

Florida Residents will be responsible for Florida Sales tax. Tag & Title fees at the time of the sale. and out-of-state Residents will be more than likely responsible for their states sales tax. tag & Title fees in their own state.

A temporary tag can be issued if needed to transport the vehicle back to your home state. Temp tags are good for 30 days.
